00588 Fault code...

Featured Replies

Thanks to VCDS-Lite:

00588 -  Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)

        29-00 -  Short to Ground

Does anyone know what this might mean, please? Or more importantly how I might resolve it please?

All help much appreciated!

Thanks!

If you aren't comfortable checking wiring to the airbag, which will mean disconnecting the battery get it to a decent VAG garage or Skoda. DO NOT clear the code otherwise the airbag could deploy.

Sort it as a matter of urgency.

Hi guys anyone got any further advice on this please. Trying to save some pennies!

You just had cruise fitted?  I would hedge bets on the steering wheel airbag not being reconnected to the airbag wiring when the wheel was refitted.  Assume airbag light on dash?  = next MOT fail.

Only issue being I think the airbag light was on *before* cruise was fitted.

But they've hashed something with cruise I think.

Well, "open short to ground" basically means something is either disconnected or broken wiring.

I would certainly be looking there

Didn't you have same fault with passenger airbag too?  From memory?

All I can offer you too by the way, is replacement airbags / controller from a fabia of similar age. :)

No the passenger airbag is one fault I haven't yet had! ;-)

If that would help then I'm interested!

Either the airbag isn't plugged in or a slip ring fault. I doubt its the airbag itself (although possible).

I have this also... Checked with my obd Orange scanner. Although you don't get the extra reasoning like on vcds. Mine came on when I beeped the horn bizarrely. Horn still works, light came on?!

Ordered a slip ring, have it now so will be fitting shortly when a get myself the splice nut to remove the steering wheel. Mine has cruise also...and this works perfect.

Is it possible that if someone coded out the error, it can come back after a certain time? This is the case with Bmws, they have a "counter" that can be reset but begin to count back each time the ignition is turned. I'm hedging bets on this as brocko, the last owner of mine, had the issue 2 years ago and didn't say he'd sorted it. He did have vcds as he tried to sell that to me with the car. Sorry to butt in the thread.

If I change the slip ring and it was that which was faulty, will my handheld scanner clear the error? I've cleared faults with it before with my mk4 golf

Sorry to butt in the thread.

Not at all - no worries - all thoughts and experience welcome!

Well, only place to reaLily check is behind airbag/steering wheel first, as a moving part. Unlikely to be elsewhere.

Thats a different fault, one has probably led to the other.

Is it possible though that a coded out airbag issue,or even anything coded out, can return with a warning light ?

Edited by fabialousvrs

If the coding is altered to remove an airbag no code will return as the part is turned off (unless that part is phsically still connected).

However you can't code out the drivers airbag so it's all acedemic anyhow.

Fixed mine today. I received my m12 spline and set to work removing steering wheel, shroud and the squib. The clock spring on my car was much more loose to turn than the replacement, likely wiring was loose or something had come away inside it. All back together, cleared airbag light with my handheld obd. Sorted! :-) took 30mins

I am having problems with my car will start straight away when cold but has bad engine shake and wen I set off abit chokey on the revs

As soon as it's warm runs as it shud but wen I stopped at the traffic lights loads of smoke out the exhaust after a few seconds

I have just had a new turbo put on pd130

Cam sensor done and had the timing checked

The car also has a egr delete on it and I think it could be remapped

Does any1 know what it could be

It could be because you've hijacked a thread about airbags, please start a new topic detailing your problem.

I wouldn't call it hijacked and sorry I'm new to the site
