Used Octavia buyers' guide?

After ending up with yet another Mondeo for the last two years the time has finally come for me to end up getting a Skoda. Specifically I will be looking for an Octavia VRS, either petrol or diesel, estate or hatchback, any colour (I am not a picky person). My budget will be £4000, £5000 at an absolute don't-tell-the-wife-I-spent-that-much maximum so this puts me with fairly restricted choices at the 6-figure mileage end of the market.

Being a Ford person all my life I know next to nothing about VAG engines, reliability and so on. Is there a definitive list of what I should be looking out for when I look/test drive, any specific problem areas that crop up and need fixing besides the usual regular service intervals etc? Hopefully I will be part of the VRS club in the next month :sun:
