Replacement engine, were to look

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New to the forum so if this question has been asked and answered already somewhere else please link/direct me. I did a quick search but no joy.

Onwards with the issue; self-explanatory from the title but basically I lost oil pressure and my VRS died :'( . The engine hasn't seized but I have a horrible feeling that there could be some bad damage internally. As a result I am looking at different solutions, one of which is to replace the motor because of the potentially spiraling costs of trying to repair the current one.

Does anyone know of Skoda specific breaker yards, etc in the South West area (I live in Bristol). Ebay showed plenty of breaking VRS's but they all seem to be in the Yorkshire/Lancashire direction. Ideas please!

Many thanks in advance.

i have one with much lower mileage than that ebay one (102k) that i was keeping for a mk2 golf, however i would sell, pm me for info

Could be a blocked oil pick up strainer thats caused the lack of oil pressure. It's a very common problem on VAG 1.8T's especially engines that haven't been serviced correctly. It's a cheap & easy fix to replace the strainer & you may be one of the lucky ones who have had this failure but haven't distroyed the engine internals & turbo.

Id be tempted to at least try a new oil pickup pipe before a new engine to be honest

Thank you all for the swift replies! And thanks for the offers aswell, I'd spotted 'devonutopia's engine on a prowl of Ebay.

Some useful links too. I'm not in a financial position at this present moment to buy an engine straight away, need to wait for payday at the end of the month.

I will look into the oil pickup pipe. I'm going to whip the sump off this weekend and have a look at it. *GULP*

I do get the impression that this hasn't been looked after very well, I've only had it 3 months and I've had the thermostat changed. I was very lucky with the cambelt change because the water pump was coming apart as I drove to the garage!! A close shave indeed. A known fault I understand.

Any further tips will always be appreciated.

Thanks again.

My guess is you'll find the strainer is all sludged up. I would advise buying a oil pick up strainer & VAG sump sealant in readiness.

Twigworth Breakers in Gloucester... usually have alot of engines, plus millions of other bits for everything under the sun.

Went up to this guys place at the weekend - literally had hundreds of engines and they are all low mileage and guaranteed. He delivers via courier as well - could be worth a look

A damn good find, I am much obliged. Currently sorting out engine hoist etc for the potential swap.

Has anyone done this job before, anything particular niggles or difficulties that I should be aware of? I'll start a new topic once I start the job proper but as a precursory question..?

Hope you're still going to check the oil pick up on your engine before you plunge into a engine swap.

If you do have to replace your engine I would check the oil pick up on any donor engine too.

Yes I intend to rip the sump off this weekend to have a look.

I was thinking of taking the cam cover off to check cams and other bits for potential damage, good idea?

Just check the oil pickup pipe first tbh and pray :)

No problem mate :) - The guys seemed quite genuine as well, They only break performance models, and the amount of stock was unbelievable.. like i say there was a floor with about 200 engines.

I got an S3 interior for £250, with no wear etc on the seats at all :). So on first impressions prices don't seem too bad.

He has a complete black Octavia vRS in the yard, that is super low mileage that's had a light front end smash, otherwise it was very mint. - he said he only buys cars to break with less than 100k on the clock

Good luck mate :)

I have a spare AUQ buddy - Only asking £150 for it 122K

Iv got a AUQ spare.

122k only wanting £100 for it - No ancillarys tho!
