do i have a potential problem

Featured Replies

I have noticed over the last couple of weeks that my engine temp gauge has not risen above 70degs, it normally runs at 90degs and has done so over the last 4 years.

Is it possible that the thermostat could be on the way out, even though it is only 2 yrs old or could it be something more complicated.

I would be grateful  for any advice that is forthcoming.

Does it get to 90 if you leave it ticking over?

Good question, I haven't tried that, I will do that tomorrow and see what happens, and get back to you. Cheers

Your symptoms are that of a themostat issue. My friend has the same issue. I just replaced his temp sensor which has not cured the problem so a new stat is the next thing to replace.

Stood still going to 90 will definitely be the stat.

Doing my stat at last this weekend, been driving it 12 months like it. :(

New stat needed. Genuine VAG only though.

Well i ran the car on idle for just over 20 mins and the temp gauge didn't move at all, other than the thermostat (which I think it is), are there any other possible causes that you are aware of.

thanks

Ian

Temp sender can cause problems, if you have vcds you can read both feeds and compare the two. One goes to the ecu and the other to the gauge. They're cheaper and easier to replace than the stat, but again only use a genuine part as copies have a habit of not lasting

I had to do this, i did the temp sensor first, still went up to 70 and threw the eml light on, did stat from tps gets to 90 within like 2 miles of driving and runs alot nicer too :)

Did my stat this morning. All went to plan.

All back to 90c now. :)

i just noticed on the invoice i got from the garage that put my vrs through her mot, they never fit a new thermostat like i asked them to! temp is still hovering around the 70 mark on normal driving!

guess i just have to get the job done myself....

also on this subject, is the housing flimsy like some other car models are? is it likely to snap or just crumble on removal?

cheers

Theres rumours the housing can warp slightly so might not seal correctly on refitting. Might be worth replacing the housing at the same time for good measure

My housing was solid, I bought a spare from GSF for less than a fiver in case there was a problem but never used it.

thanks mate. i just remember the one i had on my old mk1 focus 1.8, took it out and it fell from a couple of inches high and just shatterd all over over the joint haha! oops.

thanks for that though bud :)

Mpg has increase 6mpg on my usual run, didn't think it was effecting mpg that bad. I was wrong.

Lost my exhaust pop now, which I was enjoying, probably over fuelling.
