Idle/Tickerover time

Featured Replies

for ages now, when i start my car up, it takes an age to settle down to usual tickover. sometimes it almost shakes and if you have anything on the passenger seat you can see it vibrate. The other day upon starting it, it took longer than usual and i had the check engine/engine management light symbol thing flash at me for a minute or so before going off. I regularly change the spark plugs (every 10k) so i'm not sure why it does it. I can't think why it does it. It will be going in for its 30,000 mile service soon so i'll have to leave it over night with them so they can start it up from cold. What do you think? It shouldn't normally take that long should it?

I'll try and attach a link to a video on photobucket and hope that it works so you can see it.

Is that not just the choke? Will take longer to go off on colder mornings.

However this doesnt explain the engine management light

surely it shouldn't take a minute to settle town to idle tickover speed though? Especially as the above video was 12 degree's, so not a cold morning. But when the light came on in the morning it was 5 or 6 degree's i think at the time. And there shouldn't be any heavy vibrations or shaking should there? Just a bit puzzled as to why it does it, most cars you start up and off you go?

Not sure about the eml. But when you start it up, pop it out of P then back in again. Mine sounded rough some mornings and this was the problem - I parked up, put it in P, foot off the brake then handbrake on. I think it must have rolled back a bit and been resting on the gears. Can't really explain it more than that.

coil pack having issues with damp?

  • Author

Mm, I did think about the coil pack, but the car runs fine otherwise.. It's done it for a quite a long time really and the car is just recently out of warranty (January this year) so hopefully if anything did need changing at the service they might be lenient and do it under warranty.

Mis-firing? The vibration and EML don't sound good I'd be tempted to get it in to the dealers soon as poss.

I'm booking it in for the 11th hopefully as that's the next day I can do. As I said, the car seems to still run ok once it's settled down, but the EML light was a bit worrying.

My XC70, XC90 and Mustang used to do that when in park. Especially if you rolled in gear before locking in the handbrake. The warning light isn't good though.

Plugs breaking down? Ive had eml light on with dodgy plugs.

Mm, I made sure earlier that it hadn't rolled. Stopped, put it in neutral, handbrake up then put it in park. Will see how it is tomorrow.

Shouldn't be, they've done just under 10,000miles and last time I changed the plugs, the ones that had been in there looked ok. I've got new ones arriving in a couple of days so they'll be changed very soon, as they won't be done at the 30,000mile service.

It still amazes me that Skoda think they don't need changing until the 40,000mile service.

  • Author

Next day they could do is Monday 17th. Plugs will have been changed by then, hopefully everything will be ok until then.

Its worth a try also ask if your car is running the latest software from skoda. You may aswell whilst its in. 40k in my mind is daft i had mine done before 30k. My wifes corsa is 80k...........so vx say. They also got done at 30k.

i mentioned it at a previous service and they said it was, but i'll ask again. When they investigate it, do you reckon if i ask nicely they might do any work under warrenty? I think it ran out in december.. Bought the car december 2011, so presume it ran out december 2013! Fingers crossed, don't fancy paying a huge amount.

Do you run the car on 98 or 99 ron petrol?

The Tickover at 1,100 and dropping to the 800 slowly is normal.

Your Vid shows the correct amount of time.

The roughness as it drops the revs is sometimes down to running lower than 98 ron,

or needing a ECU update.

Plenty owners get told there is no need for an ECU update, only to find out later it should have been done.

Which light the 'EPC'

or the 'Engine shape light', Control System for the Exhaust,

ie sooting up, running too rich probably.

If its got good Spark Plugs in and no Misfires, the ECU update is done,

get 99 Ron in, get it all heated up and once properly hot, blow that soot out the exhaust. Give it a good long blast up the road.

always V power.

Is it? so everyones takes a minute or so to settle down? I'll definitely ask about an ECU update then.

Yes,

there is a thread from the member in Spain that had a breakdown and required a new Fuel Pump.

'zard'

Same timing in the RPM drop, and he has the same concerns as you in not being smooth on start up.

Maybe just give Tesco Momentum a try rather than the Shell V Power Nitro and their mystery Additives.

Save you £2.50 a tank and the car might run smoother.

EDIT, Bumped the 'Rough Start' thread as i could not link it.

Taken it into the dealers today and any work needed will be put in under warranty which is great. Picking it up tomorrow, so will see what they find.

Warranty is 3 years/60k, so you should be still in warranty.

Ok great, thanks. I for some reason was under the impression it was only 2 year warranty as I hadn't ordered it brand new. (Got it off the forecourt with 20miles on the clock)

The dealer apparently couldn't replicate the issue which is strange as it does it pretty much every time I start it up from cold. So either the car was behaving or what I'm describing is perfectly normal. Who knows. They said I could leave it with them for a few dsy and they could just keep starting it up all day until it does it which doesn't seem good for the engine, and it only does it when cold anyway. I'll monitor it and just have to live with it from the sounds of things!

So has your car had an ECU Update recently,  did it get done at the 20,000 mile service?  Or Today?

  • Author

And in relation to the engine management light, they also couldn't find any fault codes, it was apparently 'squeaky clean'.

And no, to my knowledge it's never had one. I did ask about it a while back, and was told no, it doesn't need one.

'But they all say that'.     Thats them that often say, 'They all do that'.

Best check with the Dealer Again, or any Dealer,

or just ask Skoda UK Customer Services.

'Would my car benefit from a ECU update, should it have had one?'

http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/service-and-maintenance/national-pricing/servicing

Fault Codes might not show if there have not been enough misfires in a Cycle.

In cars i have changed gubbed plugs in, there were no Fault Codes.
