A weighty question?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a replacement car for my AX GT as that got obliterated the other week.

Looking through the stats for the vRS I can't believe the quoted kerb weight. My Impreza's quoted weight is around the 1290KG mark. The vRS is quoted as being 1315KG.

Is it made of gold/platinum? What makes it so heavy? Has anyone put one on a diet to see how much weight can be lost?

Regards,

J.

I think a lot has to do with the engine. Its quite a big heavy lump of a thing.

Possibly build quality may come into it too, everything seems to be more 'solid' feeling compared to my '04 Civic i had before.

It's Mainly the Diesel Engine which is allways heavier, Petrols Like Mine are just over 1000KG, But they are large for their class/market.

The engine and the bleedin great six speed gearbox which is no featherweight trust me.

The big lump of pig iron in the front doesn't help the vRS kerbweight. The lower end Fabias (probably the 1.2) come in at 1090kg.

Cars are definately heavier than they used to be. My first car - a Vauxhall Nova 1.0 was under 800kg IIRC and the Mk2 Jetta I replaced it with was well under 900kg.

Also it is NCAP 4 stars. All that safety comes at the expense of weight, plus the quality of materials, plus the heavier diesel unit = lard ****. But don't let the kerb weight fool you into thinking it drives like a 1.3 Ford Sierra or anything. It is not at all underpowered.
