Starting

Hi

I am encountering an intermittent fault on starting my 07 Octy.

The glow light and EMC light will occasionally not illuminate, after several recycles of key all is good. It happens at all phases of engine  i.e. cold (first start) and when engine is hot other links point to a relay 109 but am unable to locate said beastie.

Any assistance to point me in right direction would be greatly welcome

I've had diagnostic's on car no fault codes registered either on main log or immobiliser log so points to electric. Any clues would be invaluable

Its off to the Skoda man on Wed watch this space any time after for silent screams

Weird electrical issues often point to the battery.

I had an intermittent ESP fault. Changed battery to a Bosch 096 780cca. No probs since and starting is a breeze with the extra power.

As I said in my last post SILENT SCREAMS. Skoda have today said my ECU is not accessible and they request £1750:00 to replace the item. Any ideas out there before I part with hard earned cash. I am a little perplexed as I can buy a computer off the shelf for £300 all singing all dancing and this ECU is nothing more than that but over 5 times the cost.

Have they tested the battery? Weird electrical gremlins tend to point towards it failing. It cant be the ECU, since the car does run when its working fine. Just because their tools cannot connect to it, does not mean its broken. The ECU talks to the instrument cluster and other systems and sensors.

You know Mannyo all the way home from Yeovil thats the conversation I've been having with myself. Yes it is intermittant in its starting cycle but as you say once its running nothing happens the motor purrs like a kitten I can access all reading from the ECU on the stalk, watch the fuel flow alter as I change speed etc engage cruise. Just one general question Can anybody advise when the ECU is fitted into the car and diagnostic is plugged in does the VAG need power on the ECU from the car battery or does the VAG self power the ECU in test mode. Seems a bit odd to me that Skoda were unable to acces the ECU when the ECU (EMC) light was not lit on the dashboard.

Put a new battery on it and give it a try, you have nothing to lose especially if your current battery is fairly old, it will need replacing at some point anyway.

I don't have much experience with Skoda, having only had mine a few months, but I do with Rover 75 Diesels. My mate has the Rover computer and we used to regularly connect it to my car. He always put a battery charger on the car battery while he had the computer connected. So I assume the computer does takes a lot of juice out of the car.

As others have suggested, I would try the fitting of a new battery. We have a local factors who specialise in alternators and batteries and they'll check the system for free for you. Do you have anything similar local to you? Look for reconditioned alternator suppliers and see if there are any near you.

They'll be able to tell you the condition of the battery and of your alternator, that way you can rule that out or in.

Alas dear readers the Skoda dealer was correct in his guess and from the discussion I had with the "technician" I hazard it was purely that. I took a second opinion from a Audi/Volkswagen outlet they carried out further investigation sourced, remapped, replaced, and tested another ECU I am now back on the highway and looking to move on, Thanks to all who made an input into this
