The user handbook of our 1.2 tsi FL says use VW504.00 oil for extended service intervals but 502.00 for fixed (15,000km/annual) intervals.  Vehicle coding is QI6 so is set for extended, but I intend to do annual servicing as we'll only cover 8-9,000 miles annually including short runs (and I'm old-fashioned).  Bearing in mind the huge price difference in the oils, is it OK to top-up with 502.00 oil during the first year?

I will get the setting changed at the first service (it won't bother us in the meantime), but the selling dealer is 185 miles from home and the nearest dealer over 20 miles.  Meanwhile there must be 504.00 oil in the engine right now.

Only 20 miles...........you big wuss................how about 60 miles for me......................

If it is on variable servicing then there should be 504 00 oil in it now. You can top up with 502 00 but best only if you really are going to service at the fixed interval.

Just addressing the oil price, you should be able to pick up a 1 litre bottle of 504 00 oil off the net reasonably cheaply. Besides, on a cost-per-kilometre basis, is oil REALLY that expensive, given its vital role to the engine?
