Product selection advice

Featured Replies

Being as the new car will soon be here, and I want to keep it looking good with minimal fuss, and without going mad on costs, would the following be wise choices:

I already have a pot of Collinite 486, Autoglym  SRP + Meguires NXT wax.

I was looking at adding:

Sonax xtreme brilliant shine detailer

Sonax full effect wheel cleaner

Sonax xtreme wheel sealant

Blue perl microfiber applicator pads

Purple monster edgeless XL mf towel

Any recommendations on cleaner/protector for plastic and rubber trim parts ?

Thanks.

I highly rate all of the Sonax products mentioned, if you have Collinite 476 doublecoat then you don't really need to look at another wax.  Great product.

The Purple Monster Towels are fantastic quality, grab three of their small buffing towels, they are superb and useful for pretty much everything, they also wash really well.

For wax application I prefer a foam applicator, if you are on Cleanyourcar (guessing by the products mentioned) then take a look at their german applicators (red/white) or something similar as these have a polishing side and a wax application side (can be machine washed with non-bio and last well)

Autoglym Bumper Gel is cheap and effective for all exterior trim as you get started (Amazon has the best price iirc)

Don't forget a quality wash mitt or pad for two bucket method wash.

Thanks Sparkly.

Aye forgot to mention I have 2 buckets (but no grit guard) and a lambs wool wash mitt.

Yep looking on clean your car ;) some items you mention are out of stock atm, but hopefully when I get around to ordering will be replenished :)

I have some of the AG gel ... but never seems to last that well ?

Glass - Gtechniq - G5 Clear Vision ?

You are always chasing your tail a little bit with trim unless you go for a quartz type trim protectant.  Have heard Autofinesse Revive does ok on durability though.

Some people get on really well with G5 others not, it's not what I have, but mine is an autobrite product and not available from CYC.  The Carpro sealant is another option, but they all do the same job, generally the trick is in the application.

OK, Thanks again :)

As Sparkly said the Purple Monster Microfibers are brilliant, I absolutely love them

These are the ones I have: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/microfibre-cloths/microfibre-buffing-towels/monster-microfibre-purple-monster-pkg/3/prod_1303.html

I also have Auto Finesse Revive which I find normally lasts a good few weeks on trim, It also provides a good bit of beading too.

Not used any of the other products so can't comment on those, but the Sonax BSD is raved about pretty much everywhere.

Package arrived from cleanyourcar :)

As OP with the exceptions:

Sonax xtreme wheel sealant- out of stock so got AG wheel sealant instead.

I added the Auto Finesse Revive.

Dropped the Gtechniq - G5 in favour of AB Ghost Rider, but that's not yet been despatched (ordered from AB direct as couldn't find it elsewere).

How soon do AB usually despatch items ?

Thanks to the forum discounts, I saved a little bit too :)

Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news

AB Direct are a nightmare I'm afraid

Many people have had delivery problems

Ooops !

Well paid by paypal so can soon get it refunded if nothing happens I guess :)

Are there any other websites you can buy the product from ?

Oh fiddlestix !

I ordered the Nilfisk + foam pack from them (and discount code), I should have looked harder

Thanks for the heads up and info ChrisRs

Edit:  still cant find Ghost rider on there though

In fairness to Autobrite, they ballsed up in service over their Christmas sale. I have ordered many times and had great service.

Any concerns call them up and speak to Mark or Jackie, I bet your package will be there next day.

Nice post Mark

I still begrudge their 6.95 flat postage rate which is extortionate for a 100ml bottle of Ghostrider.

But that is their choice and it's up to us if we want to accept that when polished bliss is free on anything.

Shipping was £4 ... and order now processed, so fingers crossed.

Because of the discount it was effectively £1 for me .... I hadn't realised its only a 100ml bottle ... damn that ghost rider better be good at that price

It is great stuff, highly recommend to anyone.

And 100ml of product used only on one car would probably give ten years use. It goes for miles and is showing to be crazy durable on my car. Every time it rains hard the windscreen looks like I just applied.

Follow the application process of glass polish, glass cleaner to remove oils (or IPA wipe) apply sparingly with a good foam applicator leave to haze ten minutes and then buff off using glass cleaner. I used AG products Glass Polish and Fast glass with great results.

I'm getting some Aquapel from Devonutopia

Have you used it?

Looking at the way water sits on the glass atm, I am guessing the dealer applied something (They usually use Auto Glym products IIRC). So can I put Ghost Rider on top after a wash, or do I need to use IPA or cleaner first ?

I would clean it thoroughly with IPA ..or it won't adhere properly

OK I will get some IPA then ... lol It keeps adding up !

I am guessing acetone free nail polish remover won't be suitable ? (the wife has plenty of that ;) ).

Chris didn't you buy some hell shine abyss sealant not too long ago? Did you ever use it on the glass or was it not recommended ?

I still can't seem to stop the G5 from streaking on mine so thought I would blast the glass with sonax today, it's been much better.

Ps I will get back to you on a date for this week if you really don't mind. Been chatting to mark to try rope him in to a coffee and a convo with us.

Yes...Car has it applied under the Sonax BSD.......I wouldn't put that on glass though Carl

Sonax is fine

Thanks Chris. It's amazing how many uses the sonax BSD has.

I love that you can put it on all the black plastics, (that the yeti has many) and it repels as good as it does on paint.

Ok, all products are ready, and tomorrow looks to be ready for my cars first bath :)

Dealer has applied the usual AG stuff, and tbh looks like they did a good job, now its my turn .... just to check this is the right order to do it ....

1.Spray wheel cleaner on, spray tyre foam on, leave a few mins.

2.Snow foam all over (minimum on the adjustment) and leave 5 mins.

3.Pressure wash off (at finest spray setting I presume).

4.Hand wash with AG shampoo and 2BM (or is this surplus to requirements as its not very dirty and has had a recent AG SRP ?)

5.Pat towel dry with purple monster.

6.Apply/buff Armour All on bodywork.

7.Apply/buff Ghost Rider on glasswork.

8.Apply Auto Finesse revive on black plastics (or maybe I don't need to do this just yet ??).

9.Apply/buff Sonax BSD on bodywork.

10.Apply/buff AG wheel polish (on cloth so as not to spray onto brake disks).

11.Put everything away and drive somewere to take pics of (hopefully) very shiny car

12.Get up the following morning and swear at birds for dive bombing the car

Just an update from a non detailer perspective:

Valet Pro snow foam ++++  .... now won't try anything else, foams exactly as expected and cleans well.

Purple monster MF drying towel, and the CYC huge fluffy drying towels, ++++ .... the CYC one is cheaper, larger and does as good a job IMO.

Purple monster and Eurow MF buffing cloths ++++ .... Again, Eurow is cheaper and does just as good a job, does have an edge, but not and issue if used accordingly.

Sonax BSD ++++ great results, minimal effort.

Sonax Full Effect wheel cleaner ++ does its job well, perhaps a bit pricey as maybe only 5 treatments worth from mine.

Hellshine Ghost Rider glass cleaner - works OK and will last well as little needed, but unsure results are any better than Rain-X which is cheaper.

CG petes 53 wax ++ can't comment on durability or beading yet, but easy on/off and does bring the paint to life IMO ... I have left it as top wax to see how it beads and lasts before needing some boost from BSD.

Auto Finesse Revive +++, seems to be keeping plastics looking good so far from one application :)
