140 v 170

Featured Replies

I'm coming to the end of the lease on my 2.0 SE 170 diesel and the best thing I can say about it is that this is the first time I will ever be looking to have another of the same car. However, the best deal I can get is on the 140 version. Is there much difference driving-wise?

You might miss the extra power on overtaking.  I've driven the 140s a few times and that was the main difference.  Fuel economy is roughly the same I think.  140s are CR now as well so same technology.  Are you going for same spec again?

Unless you frequently drive 4 or 5 up then you probably would notice the difference. The 140 uses a tiny bit less juice and the insurance is a bit cheaper too, but if they're not important to you go for the 170.

Only reason I've got a 140 is it was the only L&K DSG I could get at the time I was looking. Took it to Spain last December, Cardiff to Portsmouth ferry, Bilbao to Donastia San Sebastián with four large adults & luggage and a supermarket shop on return journey ( loads of booze). Admittedly it was nearly all motorway but my passengers were surprised how fast we did the journey and the car never felt strained/underpowered.

After 7000 miles (it's on 12know) I rarely get more than a just over 40 mpg, but suspect it's due to high cruising speeds, around town it's early thirties which I think is ok for a big AWD auto.

A 170 - I think I would probably like the reserve of power, I sometimes think about chipping but the car is perfectly adequate and so far I haven't got round to it - which probably sums it up.

I miss my 170 Elegance estate brilliant long distance cruiser cracking engine I had that for 4 years then moved onto a 140 SE hatch. I was hoping for better fuel economy and got it marginally but missed the poke of the 170 no difference in insurance costs for me here in Germany as both are 2.0 engines:-(. I had a tuning box put in the 170 in the last year of my ownership which was simply awesome 230bhp and the torque was really amazing think it ended up around 410 on the torque scale, absolute hoot driving backwards and forwards from Germany to the UK. Plus the fuel consumption figures improved by 20%.

I am more than likely gonna be back in a Superb next year a new mk3 as I miss the comfort, space and pace.

Yes, same spec. The company I'm with at the moment haven't got 170s but the 140s are very cheap. The difference between them and a 170 elsewhere is about £50 a month and as it's lease I wouldn't be able to do anything to the engine. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

On motorways and dual carriageways overtaking in the 140 is fine.  But overtaking on single carriageways I think you would benefit with the 170.  I have the 140 and even when 1-up, overtaking can be a bit squeeky-bum time, especially if the person you are overtaking decides to speed up even just a little bit.

I had a test drive in a 140 DSG 4x4 and it didn't feel up to it. They didn't have a 170 near to compare it to, though.

Which chip did you use to uprate the engine?
