my son is going off to college soon & he currently costs me £1000 to insure on a fabia 1.2 56 plate . he will only be using the car when he returns from college . 

the car is owned by swmbo and he is a named driver on her policy so car will always be insured

i know there is car insurance out there for occasional use .

a few questions

• how often can you insure the same person on the same car
• can you do a day a week or a month
• how much would an 18 yr old cost each time per timescale
• how easy is it to sort out each time

or

• is it worth paying for a whole year

 

just trying to save a bit of money & let him use the car when he needs it

if the car is left with no insurance it must be declared SORN and therefore kept untaxed offroad. The car is then reinsured and taxed again when needed.

Far better to keep the car insured and taxed, add yourself as a named driver and drive it occasionally.

in that case the only issue would be possibly incurring a £25 plus admin fee each time the policy is changed, along with the additional premium each time. Remember that when you remove someone you may not get the same reduction as when you added them.
