Are warning indicaters on dash board correct

Featured Replies

Was out driving last week in my Skoda Fabia 2 1.9 sport when my dash lite up with the "curly pig tail" which according to the book is Glow Plug system [diesal engine]I took it to a small Skoda dealer who was very helpful and somewhat puzzling when he said press your brakes which I did and the rear brake lights failed IE blown bulbs which were replaced and the brake lights worked, which leaves one to imagine taking it in to a bigger dealer on the mis-guided thought of engine problems and a large bill when in-fact it was £5:99 for 2 rear brake bulbs!!!!!!!! Anyone experienced this? or is it a Skoda trick to make you believe the problem is bigger than it really is!!!!!

Had the same on a mates MK4 golf 1.6 petrol, EML on due to 2 blown break bulbs.

Does this on the Octavia too. Quite a common warning system in the VAG group.

Does the 2007-2009 mk2 not have a specific light on the dash for bulb blown?

My 2013 comes up with a little yellow bulb with an exclamation mark in the middle. Or somethin like that.

I had an EPC warning light in my first 2002 Octavia Mk1 1.6 petrol. It was the brake switch under the brake pedal.

Had that on a 2005 polo too.

Common fault and an easy fix. Dealer wanted £70 diagnose, and £80 if it was brake switch, plus labour.

Changed it myself. 5 min job and part cost £12.50.

Couldnt believe it haha

the warning lights have all sorts of codes as to what went wrong.... its not ness what the light says... for example youare obviously not using your glowplugs wghen driving.... wsa the same on the mark I

The glow plug light doubles as the "something's gone wrong light", mainly something electrical. The brake pedal is connected to more than just the brakes and brake lights, so a fault with the lights can effect over systems and so can throw up the warning light.

What light does the petrol use then? Epc light?

Most manufacturers tend to use the dash warning lights to warn  of a fault ' somewhere ' but like most things  from manufacturers nothing is ever logical or makes sense. You have to take it ti a dealer so they can plug in to read the error code.( moneeeeey )

As you have spotted the glow plug indicator was a blown bulb ( which is odd as i have had a light bulb indicator come up for one of these the last time this happened to me )

I had the glow plug light come on when i had my 2nd MK1 Octy & it was a brake sensor ( fixed under warranty) it was a concern specially as i was over 200 miles from home & was advised not to drive the car, at the time the AA did not have the box to plug in to read faults & had to go on a flatbed home.
