Weird Esp Problem

Featured Replies

Strange thing with ESP this morning. Started as normal thought i heard a slight grinding noise ,so turned off a/c and stereo seemed ok.But 1 mile down road another grind and ESP lit up and couldnt be switched off . So i turned off ignition and restarted every thing fine.

Any thoughts anyone? car had'nt moved for 2 days and very wet yesterday, so had anything "stuck"?

Get it back to the dealer pronto!

If you turn off ESP in a Golf Mk V GT TDI, it comes back on itself if you really start to get into trouble. I'm sure it's the same with the OctyII.

My guess is something has gone wrong with the ABS or traction control and the ESP thinks you need help so it's coming on itself and locking in the on position or even just preparing for action. You really don't want it kicking in when you are driving in a straight line at speed. As I say the ESP thing is probably just a symptom of something else.

Take it back!

But surely if it's like the ASR system, the warning light only comes on to show that the system is disabled. So from the symptoms described, it looks like the system has spotted something wrong and turned itself off.

Still a job for the dealer, though.

On another topic whats the best mpg out of one of these.

Had 39.5 on a South Wales to Kent run sat at 75-80 on cruise most impressed.

Average though 32-34mpg in normal usage anybody out there with better mpg let me know.

Binding rear brake confusing the sensor?

If I take it easy (ie 60-70mph), I can get an average en route to work (30miles) of about 69mpg. If I do 70-85mph, then it drops to around 53mpg fot the same trip. These are individual trips by the way - overall average is usually 54-57mpg. Not bad eh?

Sorry, misunderstanding. I thought DaveM meant an ESP light on the dash indicating that the system was actually re-acting to something as apposed to the 'ESP OFF' light illuminating.

In that case the system could not be turned on so I agree with you. It's a warning that ESP ain't working because one of the systems it works in conjunction with has failed.

Good Call.

Dealer had a quick look yesterday and plugged thingy into another watchamacallit. No probs found.

Going up through Mid-Wales today using firing range roads if its going to play up those roads will show up any problem.

Will post tonight any reaction

Had problem like that on my Fabia TDI, the ESP light was on on the speedo display constanty showing the esp wasnt engaged, and the ABS would work under light braking.

I took the car into Skoda who wanted to change a the ABS control unit for 500 pounds plus, so I then went to my VW specialist who replaced a kinked wire on one of the abs sensors for 35 pounds (1 hour labour)

Could the grinding noise possibly be the ABS actuating as I had a similar problem on a mercedes van once, when the TRC (think thats what the button said) had a faulty sensor on one of the wheels so it kept actuating the abs as it thought I was skidding!!

Also when the ESP light is on, as others have mentioned it means the ESP is disabled, however if the light is flashing it should be arrested  (sorry couldn't resist it) If flashing it means the ESP is taking measures to stop you killing yourself or balding up your tyres!!
