Servicing and cambelt change

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia II VRS Petrol, 08 Plate with 40,000 miles on the clock. QG1 variable service interval.

Service history as follows:

2 years old / 15,000 miles - Variable service and renew brake fluid £270

4 years old / 30,000 miles - Variable service and renew brake fluid £340

6 years old / 40,000 miles - This service is now due

What is required at this service compared with previous services (plugs?, cambelt?)?

My log book states that the cambelt is inspected at 56,000 miles (90,000 km) and then replaced at 112,000 miles (180,000 km). This seems to me to be quite a long distance before replacement and there is also no mention of a suggested time interval to have this performed irrespective of mileage. What is everyones general consensus on this? My VAG dealer hasn't made any comment about having this replaced ......

Thanks,

G

I can only advise on the cam belt mate. Everyone has different opinions on this. The norm is every 60,000miles or every 4 years which ever comes sooner and I stick to this ( I also have my water pump done too )

Others say that it's too soon and good for 80k or even 95k. Maybe it is however a few hundred quid now or 6-7thousand for a engine rebuild. I know what I'd rather.

I thought an 08 vRS would be chain-cam, so no belt to replace?

No, TSIs (with the chain) were only introduced v.late 09/59. Introduced with the facelift formally but were also in pre-facelift Limited Editions and a very few standard pre-facelift 09s.

Car in the OP should have had its cambelt changed 2 years ago...

The maximum you should pay is £249 for a variable service and £45 for a brake fluid change.

What did they do in the second service over and above the first service to justify the extra £70?

A variable £249 service includes oil, filter, air filter*, fuel filter* and spark plugs* so there should never be a variation in the price.

I'd also ask why go for variable servicing (upto 2 years / 20,000 miles). Given your low mileage you'd be better of on fixed servicing (12 months or 10,000 miles).

See Skoda's National Pricing Policy here which details what is covered and the maximum you should pay.

The cambelt should have been changed at the second service (4 year interval). Was this done? I very much doubt it if the bill for the service was only £340. I'd have a chat with your dealer, seems like they aren't adhering to the proper service requirements.

*only changed if required as per the recommended service regime detailed in your service book.
