Headlamp washers

Featured Replies

I have an 04 mk2 Pre facelift in elegance trim. I've only owned the car for 5 days now and am happy with it apart from a few niggly things. One is it has cheap tyres which I get quite a bit of road noise from where it almost sounds like a wheel bearing rumbling but that's an easy fix.

The other and most important is the headlamp washers. Filled the washer bottle today, changed wiper blades, checked washer jets, everything ok except headlamp washers so I checked fuses. Behind dash trim the 20A fuse for the washer jets was missing so as I only had a 30A fuse in my box I installed that for the time being. Operated the headlamp washers but only the N/S one works. I know that they operate under water pressure from the water so why would one work and not the other? Could the washer pump be faulty? I can manually pull the washer jet out from the bumper and the mechanism is intact it's just not ejecting from the bumper and spraying so I need to get this fixed before the MOT is due in June.

Anyone had a similar fault or have any ideas?

Perhaps a blockage of organic nature if the system wasn't filled with proper screen wash and hasn't been used for a while.

Jam the washer open and get someone to activate it and see what happens, remember it only operates with the lights on and every fifth use of the washer system.

Re road noise... good luck curing that one!

I need to get this fixed before the MOT is due in June.

It shouldn't be a MOT failure unless it has Xenons.

I'd look for the pipe supplying the nozzle, take it off and see if you get water from the pipe when the washer operates. That will at least rule in/out a blockage or pump problem.

Are the pumps east to get to or am I going to have to remove the bumper?

It doesn't have xenons just the standard halogen bulbs which apart from the colour are actually brighter than the 6000k HIDS that were in the angel eyes on my mk4 astra.
