Speedometer Markings

Featured Replies

It shows that I am not very observant!  I only noticed recently that the speedometer readings on my Octavia are not equally spaced.

Up to 80mph the numbered markings are every 10mph - 10,20,30, 40,50,60,70,80.

But above that, although the graduations are the same and are the same distance apart, the numbers go up in 20mph increments - 80,100, 120,140,160.  In other words, suddenly, from 80mph upwards, the speedometer needle moves only half as much for a given increase in speed.

I only noticed this when comparing my car's speedometer indication with my tomtom satnav speed indication.  Initially I wondered why, when the speedometer indicated just over 80mph and I therefore expected my actual speed and the satnav indication to be about 80 mph, the satnav showed that my actual speed was about 85mph.

You llive and learn.

My Octavia is the first car I have owned for years where a vertical speedo needle is not 70mph (it's 60).  My last car was also horizontal at 30.  I also dislike the needle sweep reducing beyond 80 - obviously only affects me when driving on German autobahns!.

I test drove a 2011 Octy the other day and noticed the speedo only showed the evens......ie 20, 40 60...not exactly a major problem, but when are main speed limits are 30, 50 and 70 its seems a bit odd not to show them clearly....

Buy a Boxster - speedometer is just as silly in that.  So much for German "thoroughness" and efficiency.

I drove a Boxster for 18 months, the analogue speedo was just a decorative feature and had almost no markings. At least there was a digital readout you could use instead.

I quiet liked the larger spacing on UK road legal speeds in the Octavia, although when I first got my old Octy MK2 it did catch me out a few times.

I tend to just look at the big digital reading in maxidot.

Isn't that in kph?

With some coding with VCDS, you can have large MPH displayed.
