Here's the prognosis

Driving on A34 south, on boost then hear change of engine note, slightly rough sounding and loss of boost and acceleration. Boost down from 1.4 bar to 1.0. Car keeps up with traffic but can't pull away from 1.8 Vectra, so something is noted as being UP! Can't stop because little 'un in back is being sick! Carry on for another 30 miles until reach end of A34 at Winchester. Find out that at idle, care is running very badly. Reach home (Gosport), check under bonnet, nothing visually a miss, put car to bed and think about looking properly another day.

Today, take plugs out and find that the end plug nearest the gearbox is black and oily, as is the piston surface (whilst shining torch into sparkplug hole). Other plugs have normal brown dry colouration. I therefore suspect that a coil pack failure has been causing a misfire. Can I test the coil pack any way? Still though, despite running on three cylinders, the car was still up to 80mph +. My only concern is that unburnt fuel from that cylinder has cooked the cat and it's going to need replacing for the MOT in March. It be a milltek cat, so I best save up now :o

Still, first coil pack failure to date after three years.

Im thinking valve failure on yours then.

Best way to check a coil pack is to identify which one is gone (try popping off one of the injector connecotrs whilst its running). Then swap that coilpack with another one on the car and see if the missfire moves.

Have a look at the part number on the coil pack (its on the part where the plug goes on). If the part number ends in J, K or L then its a latter coil pack and the latest version. If it ends in F,G or H then get yourself down to your local Skoda dealer and get a new SET of the latter sort free of charge, Skoda will pay regardless of warranty status.

VAG COM won't work cause the OEM ECU has been ditched for a Motec system, thanks anyway - I'm sure its coil pack and nothing more sinister, stop worrying me unnecessarily!

Actually, could have been an excuse for new turbo AND engine, fortunately no need 'cause I can't afford that sort of expense for a couple of years just at the mo (new kitchen and marriage to plan for). Will lie low for a while and plot my next move......... :D
