Weird (?) battery light problem

Featured Replies

Hello All,

This is my first post so please be gentle :)

This post is to do with a small Octavia, diesel 1.9, 2005 reg, 5 door.

Had my car in the garage to fix a dodgy brake light switch (found the info here). After some other issues that have been identified I now have a new alternator and replacement of rather singed wiring loom behind tne dashboard.

Picked up tbe car today and noticed a slight flicker from the battery light - wasn't convinced I saw it (corner of eye etc). Broke suddenly at a roundabout and the light stayed on until I revved. I've now found switching on something e.g. lights also causes battery light to come on when iding. A little dab on the acellorator and it turns off. Same with aircon and radio. I've hooked a multimeter to the battery and at idle the voltage is 14.2V. With igniton off the battery is at 12.6V.

I amgoing to call the garage, but suspect they are not around tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be a cause? Or even some general advice. I'd very much appreciate it.

Best wishes,

Mr DJP :)

I was going to suggest you check the wiring harness at the front of the gearbox for chaffed wiring......very common on the Fabia diesels.

Then I noticed you mention it's an Octavia. In that case you'd be better posting this in the MK 2 Octavia forum.

...although it's almost certainly faulty load sensor wiring the same as the Fab suffers.

The fact that u have to rev it to get the battery light to go off,  means that the alternator is only working when u rev it.

That points to the alternator 'load' wire,  ie the wire which controls the function of the alternator.

I have repaired my fabia's one a few weeks ago,    it's a very thin wire,  which, on the fabia seems to snap either at the alternator connector,   or underneath the gearbox,  as the wire is very tight,  and there's just no give in the loom there, so it eventually the wire just snaps.

In my case it was snapped underneath the car,  and it was simple case of just repairing the wire with some new wire+crimps

Thank you all.

I took it back to the garage and after a quick demo: turn lights on, turn heater on, turn fog lights on - all with a winky battery light - they said 'oh yeah it's not right'.

Apparently more than one wire is the problem (?). However the previous repair is 'under warranty' - so they have to fix it. I've also suggested ACTUALLY TESTING the car this time, we'll see.

Very much appreciate the advice and suggestions.

Mr DJP
