Water pump

Featured Replies

When I bought my car the first thing I did was get the cam belt changed. It was on 64K at the time. Now I have read a few posts and noticed that people got the pump done at the same time which I didn't. Should  I be worried? It's on 88K now. Seems I have  missed a trick here

Well when my cambelt on my work Vx Combo 1.7cdti needed replacing the mechanic said he changed the waterpump as he'd done 90%of the labour anyway and they normally are built to last about the same as the belt so it's insurance really but some can go on for a vehicles lifetime!

Would I have changed the water pump? Yes, every time!

Would I worry if I didn't? No, chances are if it fails it will just fall apart inside and the temp gauge will go up. Watch out for the heaters in the car going cold and keep an eye on that temp gauge.

Ok cheers. Will make sure It's changed at 120k when I get the cam belt done again.

In comparison, my vw golf one failed at around 148,000 miles, that's on the original water pump from when it left the factory.

Recently got cam and alt belts changed on my Fabia and Garage suggested to change water pump at same time. As Toxicvrs noted, 90% of the work has already been done to get there and it was put to me that a new belt and tensioner may place a heavier load on an "old" water pump.  Changed pump (cheap enough component), for piece of mind.

For the record, some years ago when we did the same job at a different garage with my Wife's Fabia, exactly the same suggestion was made for the same reasons.
