New car, some niggles

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I got my first Skoda a couple of weeks ago - a Fabia VRS, which was pretty cheap but needs some TLC. I'm pretty mechanically minded so it's fine, but I'm not used to newer VAG cars, so I've got some questions about some of the niggles...

Screenwash bottle - does this have two individual motors? The screenwash is leaking straight out when I fill it, so I took a look at the bottle. There's a motor at the bottom (wheel side), but if I reach around the bottle to the bumper side, there's a big hole, with a grommet in it. Should there be another motor here?

Outside temp sensor - I assume that's what it is on the MFA? Is it supposed to be near the washer bottle? There are some more loose wires down there.

Windows - I'm having issues with the windows not working very well. It seems like it's the switches that are causing the problems, as sometimes they'll work, sometimes they won't. Or is there a control unit somewhere?

Reverse lights - these aren't coming on. Is there a switch on the gearbox to trigger the lights? Is it easy to get to?

MFA - some of the readings have a '2' next to them - I guess this means the long-term readings, rather than the journey readings (usually on setting '1'). Is there a journey setting as well, and if so, how do I switch to it?

Thanks in advance!

Can't really help with the other ones, but you briefly press the button on the bottom of the right hand stalk on the steering column to change btween 1 and 2. A long press will reset the values for the one you're currently viewing.

In blue for you.

Sure its only a single pump/motor, you should see 2 pipes coming out of the pump onto a block with a connection at each end to feed front and back.

If you find the reversing light switch (front of box on my motor), if its a single connector short to earth with a wire and look if lights come on with ignition, if its 2 connectors, connect between them (I find paperclips good) and try again. On mine, the contacts in the plug and switch were dirty and cleaned up with electrical contact cleaner which sorted the problem.

Theres a switch that is screwed into the gearbox assembly, you can get to it easily if you jack up the front of the car, mine went about a year ago, the contact in the switch were worn. really easy fix, unplug switch, using spanner undo (may get a small amount of oil leak out) switch, screw in new switch, plug wiring back in. my new one i got from ebay for £2.50 and still working fine a year later

answer to the first one? Sure the grommet he mentions isn't for the low level sensor?

I assumed it was for the headlamp washer pump, judging by the number of niggles I suspect the car has had front end damage repaired with used parts.

Thanks for the replies. Yep, there was some front end damage, so it was to be expected. It looks like a cheap repair, so I'm thinking of getting the bumper off for a proper look.

On the plus side, I took the window switches apart, gave them a clean, and they're working well (for now...)
