Shield it!

Featured Replies

Right after having the K&N fitted for few days now and loving it!! It's time to think about shielding it from the heat! I'm using a good cold air feed but do want a shield for it!!

Anybody got any info on the shields what your using and what you recommend?

this is useless....the heat under the hood on these engines is high, and this heatshield doesn't even match with the hood for a good sealing

A fair few people use this on there vrs and have no problems

IMO people make a bit to much about air intake temps. The air filter sucks into the cold side of the turbo which is still hot so the heat transfer at the turbo is going to warm that air way beyond any thing the under bonnet temp. So unless you can stop the heat transfer at the turbo, the temp of the incoming air isn't that important. Just my opinion, for the record I do have a heat shield.

The air doesn't heat up much in the turbo because has a high speed and time exposure is short.

The air gets hotter and is the most important aspect because is compressed by the turbo, this is the reason why turbocharged cars have intercoolers

So,sucking hot air to get even hotter after is compressed by the turbo affect the performance badly

Heatshield and a decent cold air feed and you'll be sound ;)

R-Tech heat shields are £59 and once trimmed will leave a frozen patch of ice on your bonnet when you drive it in the cold, this proving they keep engine bay heat out of the air filter area!

If you tell Ben at the time of ordering, they will trim it for a mk1 octy before the post it out! ;-)

Lovely cheers guys seems it's very much an opinion for the owner? The cold air feed is doing well at the moment and I think I'll contact R-tech about there shield I've heard good things from many owners!

A mate of mine did a test regarding this a while back.  He tested intake temperature just after the intercooler and found the temps were pretty much identical whether using the cone filter under the bonnet or the CAF.  The CAF made no difference at all,  because the intercooler is what lowers the intake temperatures.  Just touch some of the piping near the turbo after the car has been running and tell me it doesn`t get hot! lol.  The Turbo heats up the intake air ALOT because it is heated by exhaust temperatures(this is why turbo cars run intercoolers), so a CAF on a turbo charged engine really is a waste of time.  Your sucking in cool air then heating it up again.

If you look at guys who run highly tuned skylines and supras, they run open mushroom or cone filters under the bonnet all the time.

Whats a good cone to get and is it worth getting a shield then?

if you gonna argue me that air gets hotter because is heated by the hot turbo and not because is compressed,I'm expecting next to argue that the Earth is flat....whatever.

The earths not flat ?

WHAT !!!!!

Who spoke to you of this sorcery !?!?!?

K&N, i wouldn't use anything else. If you go on there site and look at the universal filters you can pick and choose a size to suit the space you have.

brand whore

Jabba use ( or use to use ) k&n but back themm to sort the excess oil to sort risks of issue

Oil n bake lol :D nutters

Tried them all, pipercross lost me 5bhp on the rolling road so wouldn't use them again. K&n have always been good if you don't over oil. Wash with fairy liquid if it seems to oily ;)

Plus the universal range is cheap and allows you to pick a size that suits :D

What size have guys gone for. Sure I read somewhere about honda s2k filter being good because of how big it is?

Yeah I hear the s2k filter is being used a fair bit.

My intake came with a k&n already but I had a 9"x6" one on my vr6 which was just under £50 posted I think
