Weird Injector Fault - or is it fuel level

Featured Replies

Hi All, I have had my VRS a couple of months now, it has been fine and dandy. however a couple of tanks of fuel now have thrown up errors with the injectors.

The problem is that I get the Engine Fault - Workshop come up on Maxidot occasionally, and this morning it was less than a minute between me restarting to clear the fault and it coming up again. When i floor the car it doesn't throw the fault, but when i pootle it does. The car kinda feels a bit irregular, not misfiring, more restricted as i cruise. Then bing... error.

Anyway, It occured to me that last time it did it I was low on fuel, this time i had an indicated 1/4 of a tank but as the fuel got lower and lower it got worse and worse, so i stopped, put £30 in and for the next 15 mins to work no bing!

Could my fuel gauge be 1/4 of a tank out? Is there a filter that could be blocked in the tank of these cars? The car was serviced 2k ago so i doubt its fuel filter.

Anyone else seen this problem?

The first thing that I'd check is when the last time that the fuel filter was changed, or even just have it changed anyway if you are unsure. A dirty fuel filter can cause all sorts of running issues with a PD.

Other thing could be the lift pump going in the tank, the fuller the tank the easier it is to lift the fuel.

Fuel filter was just changed by Skoda 2000 miles ago at a major service. Yes lift pump could be the culprit... sounds logical.

Ok gone through another tank of fuel. Almost at red and im getting the error again. So its only when fuel is low. How do I test the pump guys? Pop a pipe and turn on the ignition?

No one have any ideas?

Checked the fuel pump, well, popped the top off the fuel filter and flicked the ignition on... it seems to work fine, so its just quiet. Next? is there a second pump on the engine?

The fact that it is when you are low on fuel - does point to the lift pump struggling to me. I'm not sure how much they are - but it might be worth changing it.

It may not take much deficiency for it to cause a fuel flow issue. My understanding is that the PD has a Tandem pump, which I think is a combined fuel and vacuum pump on the end of the block.

A Tandem pump issue would give you problems when on full load at other times if it isn't producing enough pressure.

OK thanks Paul. The problem happened again this morning, still on red, but only once. I will put another tank full in and see how it goes. I am wondering if i have some ****e in the bottom of tank that the pump is pulling up, and the filter is stopping. Last night the car felt a bit lumpy when cruising speed as it threw up the error. Not misfiring, more like mud on the road or driving through puddles. thic could be blocked lines?

I will look at a pump replacement. Or my wifes A3 should have the same pump I think. I could try swapping them.

If it is the same pump - although messy it shouldn't be too bad a job to change it, there is an access hatch under the rear bench.
