Buying a New Car. Franchised Dealership or Discount Car Company?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of replacing my car in the next year or so & wondered if anyone here has any experience of buying a new car through one of the discount car companies. The RRP of an Octavia SE 4x4 2.0CR Tdi is £22,715, but I could get it £2,000 cheaper.

Are there any pitfalls with buying from non-franchised companies? or would the franchised dealer discount heavily if pushed?

The only downside (if it is) is that I would be the 2nd owner, the car having been registered to them for 6 months.

Have you tried carwow?

They quote you, you then contact the dealer you wish to buy from (you will receive several quotes) nothing to pay other than the agreed (discounted) price.

Win win IMO.

Don't buy from anywhere that you won't be the registered keeper. Too much potential for things to go wrong.

Cheers, never heard of them, I've saved their website. Just cannot see a dealership discounting heavily.

What do you call a decent discount?

we just got over £2K off a Yeti.

I've found an Octavia Elegance 4x4 Estate £4,500 less than RRP. I've sounded out local dealers and they are reluctant to discount too much.  Obviously if a dealer could get close to that they would get my business.

I was just wondering if anyone had used any of these companies and what their experience was.

Several people on here used Carwow, with the best quotes coming from Alex Lawrie in Liverpool.

The profit margin on an Octavia is about 12%, so that's the best discount you'll normally be able to get.
If anyone is offering an 18% discount that would start to ring alarm bells for me.
