Coilover help

Featured Replies

hi guys when i purchased my fabia it came with adjustable coilovers ( unfortunatly i dont know the make ) the car is very low ( i dont know how low it is tbh) when driving i used to get a faint knocking noise, ive been to a few mechanics and they believed it was my drop links, i was also made aware at this point that as my car is lowerd i needed small drop links. so i purchased adjustable links and had these fitted, the faint nosie was still there, i was then told my front wish bone rear bushes needed changing, so i had these changed along side with the ball joints on both sides.

believe it or not the faint nosie was still there, this noise is only there when im driving slow but when im driving at some speed i cant hear it. so the other day i was at this mechanics yard with my seat leon and i asked about my fabia and he said that my drop links needed shortning as they might be too big, so i gave him my car and he shortened the links, but this made the nosie louder and more noticable, the noise is now like something is lose on both ends of the car, naturally i went back to the mechanic and he said ill just put them to the normal size and i watched him adjust the links, at this point i was praying that the nosie is gone but infact the nosie is till there same as when they was shortened.

this is really frustrating me now, can anoyone make sense on whats going on.

Actually now when I'm driving at 40+ you can hear the knocking noise where as before I couldn't

what is the reg?

Think it may be my old one

EDIT - read another post you mentioned it was an 05 reg so no

More details would help, eg does the noise change when you turn left/right/accelerate/brake/go over a bump etc? Could be a CV joint but i'd expect that to get louder with speed and direction changes but it would produce a knock (full lock slow circles will confirm), have you checked the arb/bushes on that?

If it made the noise louder after the links were shortened, and the car is really low ... Could it be knocking on the driveshaft perhaps?

When I go over bumps it's fine just when I'm driving as mentioned before..

Before I had them shortened it was a faint knocking noise but since shortening the links and then putting them back to the size they was the noise was a lot more noticeable when driving, when turning its fine only when I'm driving on a straight rd or even a slightly bumpy rd

It might be your Arb knocking the chassis probably will be and you may need a different arb. Get the car on stands, take the front wheels off and look for signs of wear to ser if it's been touching the chassis. Lowering the car by too much puts alot more stress on the driveshafts CVs, check those also. Check your top mount bearings. They could also be shot

i guess arb related! these cars seem to have a lot of knocks,or is it just me?

Mine makes a weird knock from passanger side, currently on joms and i have checked the top cap isnt loose, ive replaced the console bushes and the drop links. The noise is very strange, it actually makes more noise over normal road surface/slightly rough its more of a rumbling/bouncing noise its hard to explain. I think im going to change top mounts next and then start looking for replacement bushes and finaly change suspension when ive got more money

JOM's are diabolical things. They are ok for the first few weeks, then you realize ... "what have I done!".  I bought some for my old Mk4 Golf Tdi 130, £150 delivered. After I fitted them, they worked well... until the dampers take the strain and begin to weaken, mine did anyway! They aren't the best, also a tad bouncy and IMO they don't set up well on heavy hatches, they are probably suited better on lighter hatchbacks. The springs are not of the highest quality, look a bit weedy in the front arch too.

I've got arch gaps the size of Portugal, and need to lower the car asap. I wont touch the Joms again, but will go OEM shocks with a Lowering Spring (like H&R or Eibach). Anyone else using a decent set-up that would like to share?

I've had my JOMs on for a year now and while I'll agree they are abit bouncy they're not that bad for the money. For budget coilovers they do the job but I will be removing them and going for lowering springs soon as the mrs can't stand it bouncing down the road.
