Skoda Octavia 2.0 FSI 4x4 - newbie buyer help please.

Hello everyone,

 

I'm a long time lurker on Briskoda and hopefully this week will be joining the community properly with my first Octy! 

 

I've been looking at quite a few different options for cars and have settled on a final two and was hoping I could pick your brains as to what you think would be the best choice?

 

Car 1. 2006 2.0 FSI, 118k, 2 owners, FSH MOT 10/14 + set of winter tyres - private seller

Car 2. 2005 1.9 TDI, 84k, 1 owner, FSH, MOT 09/14 but 2k more in price - dealer

 

I will be driving 8-9k pa and have had diesel and petrol before...I like diesels but know that a petrol may be the more sensible option for my driving needs. The big bug bear is paying 2k more for it.

 

Both seem like pretty good cars overall, I'm just trying to see what things I should be looking for regarding the 2.0 FSI? I know the 1.9 TDI is a tried and tested engine, but don't know much about the 2.0 FSI. If I buy privately I don't have much to fall back on if things go wrong.

 

Any thoughts, comments or advice would be very much appreciated.

Cambelt every 4 years.. oh and you will need to use 98RON with it, don't run the FSI engine on 95 as it doesn't run in fuel stratification mode if it has to retard the timings with 95RON. 

 

Aside from the usual coilpacks and waterpump (any decent garage should have swapped that with the cambelt)

Thats a tricky one.

 

I have a 2006 TDI 4x4. If insurance isn't a problem for you I think a remap would transform it into a different car and make it quicker than the FSI. The 105 feels artificially strangled and you can really feel it holding back compared to a PD130. I manage an average overall of about 44-45mpg against the combined figure of 47 and can manage 50 on a run. The FSI figures suggest you'd probably manage 30mpg.

 

Road tax on the TDI is £175. The FSI is £280 so that will add up over time.

 

 

If its a short term car for a couple of years I would probably take the FSI on the lower purchase cost but if you want to keep it for 10 years I would get the TDI.

The FSi 4x4 is very thirsty due it's short gearing.

Didn't realise that the FSI needed 98RON and not 95RON, that could change fuel cost dynamics and swing me towards the TDI.

 

I am hoping to keep the car as a long term purchase, so the chips are stacking towards the TDI. Just have to try a bit of haggling!

Yeah, most of my mileage is paid 40p/mile with work which covers my costs and maintenance. 

 

Also there is a curve when you do enough miles when a diesel starts to work out better as you have to factor in eventual turbo replacement and more frequent servicing.

 

Don't get me wrong however, would love a VRS ;)

Ended up buying the 1.9tdi - not the original one but found a better deal :)

 

Absolutely great car so far! Just need to look after it long term...

Nice choice.

Wouldn't touch a 2.0 FSI with a barge pole.  So much fuel converting into so little power
