Start stop issues

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have recently experienced when driving my fabia GL2 and it's all warmed up when I have stopped the car on few occasions instead of going into start stop mode it completely cuts off and states on the dashboard to start engine manually.

I don't seem to understand what the cause might be.

The car be's well ran and running at the right temperatures for the start stop tech to work.

Really baffled.

Any advice anybody.

there are many things that cause that message, below are what is needed for engine stop, virtually any of these not being met could cause the message, I usually see it if I open door or remove seat belt to sort something out, even though door closed or seatbelt put back on I get the message

The gearshift lever is in Neutral.

The clutch pedal is not depressed.

The driver has fastened the seat belt.

The driver's door is closed.

The bonnet is closed.

The vehicle is at a standstill.

The factory-fitted towing device is not electrically connected to a trailer.

The engine is at operating temperature.

The charge state of the vehicle battery is sufficient.

The stationary vehicle is not on a steep slope or a steep downhill section.

The engine speed is less than 1200 1/min.

The temperature of the vehicle battery is not too low or too high.

There is sufficient pressure in the braking system.

The difference between the outdoor- and the set temperature in the interior is not too great.

The vehicle speed since the last time the engine was switched off was greater than 3 km/h.

No cleaning of the diesel particle filter takes place » page 27.

The front wheels are not turned excessively (the steering angle is less than 3/4 of a steering wheel revolution).

Has your battery got a good charge in it.

Get it Drop Tested.

Is the weather cold and below when the Stop Start works.?

The battery is fine.

The start stop works fine but recently now and again instead of going into the start stop mode it cuts the engine and advises to start manually. I know I am not at fault. I secure the car as I normally would. In traffic it's fine. But for example steering the car into a parking space or driveway the car recognises a sharp manoeuvre so it should not really cut off and keep it running.

This is when I experience it most.

Any ideas?

Could be as simple as one of the door/boot/bonnet sensors or Seatbelt sensors is a bit 'dirty' or has a duff joint that has a flid every now and then, causing the onboard computer to think a door is open or the drivers seatbelt has been un-plugged!...

I found that I'd not 'clunk-clicked' properly with my seatbelt one day, and I got this message, Mechanically it was plugged in, but electronically it hadn't engaged properly and as I stopped I put strain on the buckle and the sensor thought I'd unplugged it!

I think I'd caught my t-shirt in it or summut!!

I make sure I get all my baggy clothes out the way and it's properly 'clunk-clicked' by pulling it up to make sure!!

I will have a look into it today and give you feedback.

I use the car for tuition so doesn't look good when this happens when teaching or when student is on a test. Due to the car student might get a fault that is not third fault.

Have checked all doors inc boot and bonnet sensors. The seatbelt sensors not quite sure where they are but I was hoovering my car and under the driver seat is a black box of some sort with wiring loom coming out of it. It's hanging loose and I am pretty sure it needs to be fixed onto the subframe or something. Are the seatbelt sensors there. Any ideas what this box and wiring is?

under drivers seat is the stop/start module, and I believe the one sort of loose under the other seat is something to do with airbags

Is it meant to just hang there loose? Bit concerned about it incase someone catches it with Their feet.

I've had this in the wife's Golf, but usually when I've done somethig wrong and stalled it while it tries to go into stop/start.

I don't understand what you mean by it cuts the engine pulling into a parking space?

I've only had start/stop engage when static, in neutral.

What I mean is the steering sensor and the start stop tech work together. If you do a sharp manoeuvre or reverse park the car recognises it and does not go into start stop mode. Otherwise when you drive normal without heavy steering the car will go into the start stop mode.

So when I pull onto my drive way and secure the car in neutral the engine should still be running and not go into start stop mode. Instead mine cuts off and asks me to start manually.

I hope this makes more sense.

Read the manual about the start stop it will explain in more depth about sharp turns or manoeuvres and not cutting off if you haven't already. Useful to know.
