Who has the best diesel engine?

Featured Replies

I don't want to know about any of the VW/Audi group products. It's other makers I'm interested in.Reliability/power.The usual stuff :)

I know peugots used to be great (had the hots for the old 1.9 d turbo). What about the current ones?

What are peoples experiences? What are the citroen HDI's like? are they the same as Renaults HDi? (friend has 1.5dci megane.Says its a slug) And the Alfas. Are they the same as fiat JTD's? What about Hyundais and vauxhalls? Are they junk or something rather good that is being overlooked?

BMW's seem to have sorted diesels with no slowcoach ones to avoid,as do mercedes.

As much of your knowledge and experience on other brand diesel engines would be very interesting.

Remember.Nothing VAG please.Would like an unblinkered view of what the others have to offer and who shares engines with who.

Thanks

Reckon BMW have got to be up there with the best Laurence.

Much as it grieves me to say it, Ford are having some success to.

BMW by far - if you ever see a power graph of a 330d they are awesome as standard. Smooth power and flat torque curve. Shame they not that fast though ;)

The Multipla is a JTD though, but it is quite agricultural. It has 115hp and weighs a touch more than the Fabia, but no where near as quick - but it is economical and carries it's weight very well.

as is Honda's New 2.2 unit!

The Hdi's are not bad, they seem to like to be rev'd abit as power come in higher up than say the VAG engines. Only problem with the HDi's is that they are French!

I'm a big fan of my Ford 130bhp TDCI ;) More torque than the PD130 and a much more N/A type delivery rather than a big turbo kick at 2k rpm. Not as tunable as the PD130 (depending on who's figures you believe) but will reliably make 160-170bhp with tuning box/chip.

I drove and disliked the 2.2dCi in the Primera which did not feel like it was putting out 60bhp, let alone the claimed 100+ bhp, and the 2.0l (I think) diesel in the Laguna which was better than the Nissan, but just didn't pull as strongly as the VAG PD100 in the Fabia!

Chris

Best I have driven is the Honda i-CDTI used in the Accord, CR-V and FRV. BMW's engines are certainly powerful but they are not the smoothest.

The PSA/Ford 2.7 V6 diesel is supposed to be a real smoothy also.

Like it or not, VW still produces class leading engines.

what about that BMW twin turbo effort? maybe the 535d ? not sure

didnt even know my mates BM was diesel until i looked under bonnet... on motorway it went like **** off a stick! And at idle no give away. Very nice!!

I also like the 2.5 Diesel unit that is under a Land Rovers bonnet!

Rough but very easy to use!

The honda 2.2 I wasn't all that impressed with in an accord.

It seemed to have a narrower power band than I'd expect , and isn't too hot on fuel consumption. In the new Civic it looks like it'll do better

The 136bhp peugeot 2.0 tdi seems very good indeed as well.

Which diesel engine is that then - the original N/A one? :D

Chris

Haven't used the N/A one as yet, I like the 300TDi which is nippy enough, plus it sounds great :D

I'm still looking for a good Landie though Chris ;)
