Looking at used octavias, around 2019/10 age. how does a 1.6 compare to a 1.9. They both seem to have 105 BHP and similar performance figure but the 1.6 is more economical.

 

Is it down to a torque difference? The prices of the 1.6 make them more apealing

AFAIK, the later 1.9TDis on the Octavia also had a DPF however the engine wasn't designed for it. Due to the new regs you can't remove it either so in this case I think the OP would be better to go for the 1.6CR with an engine designed to use a DPF

I've never heard of any Skoda 1.9 with a DPF. I know VWs and Audis had them, but I don't believe Skodas did.

just checked, you're right The 2.0 Scout and the diesel vRS had them.

the 1.9 is better in terms of reliability but sounds like a tractor

 

1.6 is lot quieter but can be expensive if the ERG leaks

In a nutshell the 1.9 will feel more powerful (greater torque), but less refined. It has a very good reputation for reliability.

 

The 1.6 will feel more gutless, but is much more refined and has lower road tax. It has not been around long enough to get the reputation the 1.9 has for reliability, however this forum is not inundated with problems with the 1.6, so you'd have to think they are ok for reliability. One complaint you do seem to read about with the 1.6 is owners not achieving very good fuel economy figures (compared to official combined figure). Everybody with a 1.9 seems to get close to the official book figure.

thanks for the advice guys. I'd ideally like a 2.0 CR but they are more expensive due to being newer mostly.
