Will these lowering springs fit my Vrs?

Featured Replies

A guy on ebay is selling some new apex lowering springs cheap. He said they fit a ibiza 6l vw polo and mk1 fabia, does that sound right?? Also I don't think they were for a diesel, will it make much difference if I put them on? I know they won't be the right poundage but I just want to get my joms off and see if the ride is better as to whether to keep it or sell it and get a bora

Ah the £50 ebay set that's done the rounds once already :) Stop and think before you go any further, your solution to buying cheap JOM's that aren't great is to buy a very cheap set of Apex springs with no comeback and put them on used shocks?

If you're still thinking that's a good idea look at the Apex catalogue, http://apexsuspension.com/gb/index.php?style=springs&page=springs_catalogue you'll see the TDi's have a different part number  of 80-9010 where as petrol's are 80-9000, the guy doesn't say what part number they are and to be honest the stock springs on a VRs are lower than the rest of the range anyway so as noted your 35mm drop won't be anything like a 35mm drop. My advice is save yourself £50 and just put the stock set-up on or pay out the money on something decent.

I've not got the standard springs only the dampers and to be honest if it had standard springs on then I'd want to sell it never mind the Mrs lol. It's not worth me buying a set of new shocks and springs when I'm in 2 minds about whether to keep it and it would be easier to trade in with lower springs on than joms is what I'm thinking if I go down that route

They will fit but if they are for a petrol then the front will be lower than the rear due to the extra weight of the 1.9 engine + 6 speed box..

iv bought cheap used Apex springs for my old ibiza 6L tdi that were from a petrol 9n polo. I just "modified" (chopped) a small amount off the rear springs so it sat level.. but they are no better (probably worse) comfort wise than joms lol..

I had some chopped lowering springs put on when I got it and they were horrendous they threw you out of the seat!! I just want to lose the standard arch gap but have a decent ride to keep the wife happy. Looks like I'm gunna have to buy a set of lowering springs and hope they ride ok with my old shocks on. Someone said to cut my bump stops in half on the joms I've got on and that might lose some of the bounce, worth doing or a load of *******s??

Will be fine on your old shocks.. u just might find the front sits lower than the back with the springs :(

Chopping bumpstops will only make a difference if your running that low that the bumpstops are touching when going over bumps.. nothing to loose by chopping them in half (or buying ibiza ones which are half as long). You should only be coming in contact with them if you "bottom out" they arnt a "part of the suspension" in terms of handling or comfort they are just there to stop the metal shocks hitting the metal shocker tops when bottoming out

The springs are for a petrol so it's either get ghetto on them (bad idea) or buy something else.

From looking at your recent posts you're basically looking to offload your car as the OH thinks it's 'chav' and you've shoved crap suspension on it. If you take nothing else seriously that i'm going to say take this from a man with two kids under 5 and owns a PD140 DSG Leon Sport: Do not buy a Leon, it may look nice but they are awful in terms of build quality and design.

The Bora's just an Octavia 2 which itself is just a mk5 Golf with a boot, apart from the boot space isn't that different to a Fabia, the Leon is also based on the mk5 Golf platform but you get a lot less space. I own a mk2 Leon, it is the single worst VAG car i've ever had from a design/build perspective, it has to tell you something when i'm getting rid of a 2.0 PD140 DSG Sport and keeping a Y reg 1.4 mpi surely? This is based on ownership of a mk2 Octy, mk5 Golf, mk1 Fabia, and an A4, we can fit a family of four and a weeks shopping in the Fabia with ease. As your significant other seems to dislike the 'chav' factor of your car and it's unlikely to appeal in px terms without a little work anyway, why not tone it down? You keep your options open and you never know, you may find you actually have a car already that's family friendly, and at a fraction of the hit you'll take px'ing it.

This is the plan to tone it down so the standard back box is off back on to get rid of the whistle on idle and I want to go from the coilovers to lowering springs to stop it from being bouncy. The wheels may go back silver too. If I can get some of the comfort and refinement back of the car when I bought it then I think we will keep it as I do love the car but I'm just abit reluctant to buy new springs and it still have a crap ride that's why I want to try a cheap/used set to see if the Mrs is happy with it

See if anyone local has a lowering spring + OE damper set-up and go for a ride (remember its a lot different ride wise front and back).

Sounds to me like your missus has her heart set on a different car so I think you're onto a hiding to nothing, the VRS is never going to ride well enough to keep her happy but if it were me I'd put a set of Eibach springs on with the standard dampers and sell the foul Joms and the pointless strut brace which should cover your costs and leave a bit spare to buy her something nice, if you return the car to near standard it'll be much easier to sell on when she finally puts her foot down.

No, the Bora is a MK4 Golf with a boot. The Jetta is a MK5 Golf with a boot.

As for the OP, I really dont think buying cheap springs is going to help the ride tbh. If you want to improve the ride then you need to buy decent kit, matched shocks and springs or decent coilovers. OR, buy the Mrs her own car? :D

If you read the other posts in this and other threads she is quoted as saying its 'chav' and the op mentions when he got it it offered comfort and refinement (I'm assuming this is her opinion), he removed said comfort by bolting on cheap bits making it a primitive torture device that makes silly noises in her opinion. Let's be honest £200 on JOM's is never going to give a great ride so you can see her point. The VRs is already lowered vs standard so the op seems to have a choice, stock springs, and OE shocks and get back to ride comfort (s)he describes or get an extra 20-25mm drop on lowering springs and hope the bouncy ride isn't that bouncy and that she's happy. The former will result in a lower insurance premium (less declared mods) and a happy GF, the latter will result in similar premiums and may still not result in a happy GF.

He could just skip to getting a new GF, this could work out cheaper? Depends on mileage/age/condition/mods though :D

You're right in that I was wrong but not quite right now you've brought the Jetta up :P Bora/Octy 1/Jetta 4 = mk4 Golf derivative, Octy 2/Leon 2/Jetta 5-6 = mk5 Golf derivative.

Hopefully he'll take the hint on cheap mods getting him into this position and see sense, but so far it's not looking good (read I want to spend £50 on the wrong springs for my car from a guy on ebay with zero come back) and swapping cars will likely cost more than a decent suspension setup or going back to stock.

It is entirely possible that I missed the other posts you mention since I really can't be bothered to read most of the 'chav' crap this forum seems to breed. The OP's GF sounds classy, I'm not sure 'trading down' is the right answer, she may have 'hostages' already. Wearing a rally jacket is never a smooth sartorial move and the same can be said for cars, the trick is to have a car that gives the performance while wearing a nice sober grey suit and drive it like a milkfloat whenever the GF is riding shotgun, the time for teenage posturing and showing-off has passed and this should be accepted gracefully. Q-car is where it's at and the OP has blown his cover and is busted. Sell it.

.

There was no Jetta 4 in the uk. It was the Bora. In the US they called the Bora a Jetta. But in the UK the Jetta started again in mk5 form. There was the mk3 jetta based on the mk3 golf but it skipped the mk4 golf chassis instead we got the Bora :)

I was looking at getting these off the same guy (Danwarbz?) he sayd theyre brand new but a bit tatty from storage and stuff, dont look used at all in his defense, someones set to pick them up today/tomorrow but i have first dibs if not

The wife is far from classy!! She's nearing the dreaded 30 so is more of a moaner than usual so having a lowered car with loud exhaust and anthracite wheels makes it a chavs car even though the focus St we had before (that she mainly drove) was lowered on red wheels with a loud exhaust was fine :/

She's got her own car, a little fiesta diesel that we bomb round in but if we go out for the day we take mine and that's when she moans.

She's happy to keep my car but she really wants the coilovers off and if it was down to her back on standard suspension but I hate seeing jacked up cars so as compromise I could live with lowering springs. I'll keep looking to see what lowering springs come up for sale and get them. I've got to weld my standard back box on tomorrow hopefully and I need to do my clutch when I get chance over the next few weeks so the springs can take a back seat for abit
