Cost of detachable towbar?

Featured Replies

Just got an email back from my dealer about adding front mudflaps (£45 fitted apparently) and a detachable towbar, he said the following for the towbar:

The tow bar cost depends on the type you want really.

The last one I had done on an Octavia estate would be the best, as it’s double electric and removable and fully links in with the parking sensors, so that when the tow bar is connected, the system knows you have the tow bar attached, and deactivates the sensors.

This cost a total of £768 fully fitted.

This seems a bit steep to me? I was thinking it would be along the lines of £400ish? I already added towbar prep to my order so would have thought it wouldn't be nearly £800... but maybe I'm missing something?

Towbar isn't an urgent need just thought I'd get it done when the car arrives rather than later, but at that price I think I may wait.

Shop around. The detachable bar is around £180-£200 and complete wiring for caravan electrics is about £100. If you have towbar prep and tow a caravan you will still need full electrics otherwise you can buy the rear loom for about £100 (hence no point in towbar prep).

Fitting is around £100-£150.

£400ish possible for basic electrics but a bit more if you want caravan charging electrics, £450ish.

If you can do basic DIY it's possible to fit yourself. I did on my Mk2 FL with Westfalia bar and electrics from www.pfjones.co.uk. Full instructions can be downloaded and read to help you decide if you can attempt yourself. You will need somebody on here with VCDS to program car though.

I have no plans for towing caravans it's just for towing a trailer and possibly putting bike rack on the back.

My local dealer (Gordon Lamb, Derby) asked me if I had the towbar prep on my Elegance estate, which I do, then quoted me £430 for a detachable with basic electrics. So it sounds like you need to shop around.

I didn't bother with tow bar prep and got the Westfalia 'OEM' detachable fitted with CAN coded electrics as part of the purchase from the dealer, prior to collection, for £520 inc VAT.

I thought this was pretty good value and keeps it all in warranty. I would say £768 is a bit steep for exactly the same thing!

From the dealer:  £141.67 for the tow bar prep, and approx £400 for a detachable (VAG) tow hook that is invisible to the rear parking sensor.

Hi Niall which dealer did you use? I have been quoted £700 fully fitted for a detachable bar ( I have no tow bar prep). It seems far too expensive but I don't want to invalidate my warranty by getting an independent do it. Cheers

Getting a tow bar fitted by someone other than a dealer doesn't invalidate the warranty any more than fitting a non-Skoda roof rack does.  Besides, you should get a warranty with the tow bar fitting...

Thanks wiggo it just that I have ordered a brand new car for the first time and the dealer kept saying whoever fits it would have to warranty the electrics... It sounded like a 'if you have a problems with the car it won't be down to us to sort out' ... kind of comment. i am just wary oh yes and it is on a pcp so doubly wary

I was just quoted £400 for detachable. I haven't asked the guy yet but can anyone who has fitted one to a vrs estate that the rear diffuser does not need cutting away? Thanks

It cost £800 for a detachable on the Yeti, I later found out the dealer used Chester Towbars to have it fitted, I would shop around or fit one yourself. I recently fitted one to a BMW 3 series, detachable, electrics and all the wiring needed cost me less than £200.

Thanks Fluffy that is really useful. Which dealer are you using, it would be good to know when I am haggling with Bury St Edmunds. Cheers
