How big are my nuts?

Featured Replies

In fact... are they even nuts? I need to do a wheel bearing on the mpi (2001/non abs) and my Haynes is AWOL, i've just ordered a 72mm gen 2 kit as my hatred of doing wheel bearings by hand isn't exactly a secret but for some reason I thought I needed a 19mm allen key, but the search function suggests I need a thin walled 36mm bi-hex. Can anyone clarify?

Thanks :)

Just found this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/129454-call-that-a-hub-nut/?hl=%2B36mm+%2B12+%2Bpoint#entry1625669

Looks like I need both (19mm to remove the 'old' style nut and 36mm bi-hex to put the new one on), considering it had full MDSH for the first 5 years and had the revised HG as well as the ARB replaced by Skoda you'd think they'd have done them back in the day :\

Why would of they undone the front hub nuts when doing a head gasket?

I wasn't suggesting the two were related, simply that they did a reasonable amount of out of warranty work for the 1st owner (he took it to them every 2,000 miles for 5 or more years) looking at the paperwork it came with, i'd have thought they may have done something as small and trivial as this at service time though if they've lasted 13 years clearly they aren't that bad, just annoying as I now need to buy a 19mm allen head for one nut :D

Just use a 19mm headed bolt with two nuts locked onto it.

That my friend is so simple, it's genius. Sadly i've spent the princely sum of £6 ex VAT and ordered one, i'm still trying to find a reasonably priced (relative to my usage requirements) 36mm bi-hex if you've got any other suggestions. The Draper Expert 11513 is certainly cheap enough but your other post on specialist tools in the dealer network specified thin walled so i'm guessing it may not be suitable? I'll have a look at the car and see what the clearance is like after work.
