Tyre Quandary

Featured Replies

The Ibiza came with relatively new tyres all round when we collected it.

The rears were dealer fit "new" budget tyres - Accelera Alpha no less

The fronts were a legacy from the previous owners - being a pair of Vredestein Wintrax Xtremes.

This is not the time or place for a "WTF? Winter tyres on the front only" argument but I am more than aware of the much increased wear rates of winters as the weather warms up.

I was going to buy a set of summers but that seems a waste of the decently treaded rear budgets it has and with the wedding coming up the wallet is a little light anyways

Is simply sticking Acceleras on all 4 corners to balance things out luncay or the best plan?

You might be OK with ditchfinders for 99% of the time, but when the time comes that you really definitely have to stop on a dark wet suburban road to avoid a small child who stepped out after a ball, you'll want some decent rubber.

Accelera tyres are not that bad, I had them on my old MK2 Octavia for a while as they were on the wheels which I bought for the car.

Buy two Wintrac for the rear

this will have two certain effects

1) summer will be very hot, sunny and dry(ish) - melting tarmac weather

2) next winter will be warm and wet (again)

:sun:

A side benefit of using winter tyres on melting tarmac, is that due to their higher silicon content tar & bitumen don't seem to stick to them ;)

I've got them on my car at the moment. They aren't that bad, but they are noisy.

2 accelera's ordered

i'd rather spend summer with budget grip and winter with super grip than nuke the winters over the summer

and at £40 a corner it's a small enough outlay to not really worry that much
