Nuts......

Featured Replies

.....specifically lorry nuts.

What are the, usually bright green, covers on HGV wheel nuts?

I have seen two different types on the same rig: cover with an arrow, pointing at the arrow on the next cover. And two connected with a zig-zag springy looking thing. What/why the differences?

Cheers :)

They are to show the nuts are still tight and have not moved since re fitting.

The arrow type that point at each other are designed to indicate whether a wheel nut has moved, the other type are to physically stop the nuts from moving. At my place we use 2 red covers per wheel if the nuts require a re torque.

as mentioned, to identify a loose wheel nut.

We have to fit those to our buses by law. We have red ones to which indicate that the wheel has been removed and requires a re torque after 24hrs.

Every day's a school day! I've often wondered the same thing....

Often while sat in a queue of traffic next to an HGV!

Another of life's little mysteries solved, now, what's the next question that I always wanted to know the answer to and was too afraid (or didn't know who) to ask?

They were introduced following some pretty horrific accidents where HGV wheels had come off in motion due to wheel nuts not being correctly tightened. They should be in place as a backup to correct procedures on wheel nut tightening, retorques and daily driver checks, and NOT in place.

As above, but to also prevent stupidity I found on one wagon I examined where the numpty driver gave his nuts a tweak every morning (Oooh matron!), using a breaker bar inserted into 4 foot of scaffolding tube. All the wheel nuts had waisted and ready to go PING! Once the first one had gone the rest would have followed like a machine gun, and off would come the wheel and then possibly others due to the load shift on them.

Are they compulsary or just certain (circumstances / loads / units)?

(Seen quite a few with none of the covers.)

I am not sure what the law on these is today, it may be restricted to certain weights/class of HGV. I thought that when these came in originally they were being fitted by operators as a 'no brainier' idea rather than it being compulsory.? I had an incident with one of my own trucks when being driven back from a six week inspection. The driver slowed for an island and was overtaken by his nearside rear wheel, it had four wheels on the rear axle, it rolled through the junction and onto a grass verge where it continued for several hundred yards before coming to rest against a hedge. The driver followed it down the road in the truck until it stopped and managed to get it onto the rear platform and bring it home. Fortunately It was the only time it happened in over thirty years.

As I read this, the vision was in grainy black and white, with some comedy piano playing and a look of surprise on the driver's face. ;)

But seriously, that must have been a bit of a "moment" for him. Glad it worked out ok :)

as mentioned, to identify a loose nut.
