URGENT update your passwords

Featured Replies

I have trouble remembering all of my current passwords. Any suggestions for some form of password app to generate and keep new passwords secure and readily accessible at the same time?

how would you know for sure a password app isn't secretly sending your app generated password back to the developer

best way to keep your passwords safe is a pen and paper (as long as the paper remains offline) ;)

I know one person that has 8 letters/numbers or whatever then mixes in the site creating something much longer and easy to remember if you know the 6 digits.

Only failing point is if a hacker stumbles on one and adds it to his cracking app, potentially you've given them everything?

I use a password locker, but the one I use has a self destruct if too many attempts to get in and various other measures meaning I could lose all my passwords.

So have they fixed this now?

Yes, but not every site has patched.

So for now, I'm only doing the major sites (google, amazon, paypal etc) who will be on the ball.

Trouble is, they have had 2 years to collect data. I will be updating all of mine over the next few days; a bit of a bummer as I only updated them recently anyway.

My e mail ones are similar, but 11 characters long ,and have a variable capital letter dependant on account. Back up is on a flash drive, which I only use when PC is off line. Password recovery is only via a separate account, so if anyone changes a password I get notified. On line e mail accounts have limited contacts, mainly the other accounts, so if one is hacked and address book raided to send to contacts, it's only sent to me. Contacts list is also kept as a CSV file on flash drive as a copy of that I use on Windows live mail.

Not an app but if you have a proper computer keepass will encript and store all your passwords

LastPass works very nicely for me.

As for knowing whether it's uploading information to the developer - that's actually very easy to check on with the right tools. A packet capture tool like wireshark can see exactly what traffic is coming from your PC.

I like the look of LastPass. One question. How does one think up and remember a complex master password for that app?

use your mothers maiden name and the name of your first pet
