EDL on 4x4 question.

Featured Replies

Hi group!

I have a question regadring the application of EDL on a 4x4 Octavia.

It seems to me that is applied only in the front wheels.

Do you have any experience on that?

A simple experiment is this: Put your car in deep snow with 3 wheels

in the snow & one at solid ground with good grip. This wheel must be

a rear one for our test. Try to get out of the snow.

You'll see 3 wheels spinning & the ABS working trying to correct

the front wheel slippage but the rear one with the good grip will

stay still. Most probably you'll stuck in the snow!

Any comments on this & anything that can be done about?

The local dealership (although I even talk to main technical manager),

insists that EDL applies to all wheels but the experiment shows otherwise.

Thanks for your input.

Merry X'mas.

Similar experiment...... but in mud..... EDL worked on all four only wheels with grip moved, the rear O/S stayed still and that was stuck in mud.... other 3 pulled it out with each stopping when stuck..... @ 1 point only front O/S and rear N/S were moving

When I had my Impreza I got into about 150mm of soft snow over tarmac, it had permanent 4 wheel drive & al 4 wheels span & we went sideways which wasnt where I wanted to be as I was heading towards parked cars.

With proper tyres it wouldnt have been a problem & my guess is that would be the same with the Octy as the slipping wheels would find some grip & pull the car out

Stavros, out of interest If you switch off the esp does the 4th wheel act differently
