I do not believe it

I had to phone my insurance company about the renewal on my wife's car lat week. So they saw I was calling from abroad, they asked me if I worked away. I innocently told them I was on a 28/28 rotation in Africa. they then cancelled the policies on all 3 of my cars

so I arrive home yesterday night and I can not drive, i need to spend Monday tryoig to get specialist insurance.

My cars are parked in the drive or garage when i'm away and I have a wife and 2 grown kids in the house. Surely only driving 6 months of the year should be less risk ???

Just yet another case of bloody hateful insurance companies running rough shod over us mere plebs.

They do, simply because they dictate, and they can.

We've NO choice, so we have to shut up and put up unfortunately.

They make the rules, and move the goal posts to suit their fat greedy selves.

Hate them, with a passion. :@

Basically, the car insurance game is a pig trough fest.

Ombudsman IMO. Are the cars on separate policies and is she named as the sole or main user of at least one car?

If they cancel your insurance and you don't have a new policy within a short timeframe, do you lose all your no claims bonus?

yes

errr, no!

Generally NCB's last 2 years, but can vary from insurer to insurer. Best to check with each company :)

Indeed.

Depends how you define  'a short time' too really.

Couple of years is a short time if  you've been claim free insured for 30/40 years

I'm sure Lady Elanore meant a few days / weeks, but you are right, time is relative. The earth is a mere teenager in the universe, and that makes us all amoebas.

Was your car with you in Africa?

I don't understand why they'd want to cancel a policy - or three!

Me neither. I guess they'd play it as his employment status changed and he failed to notify. Does anyone recall the 2012 hoo-ha regarding loading policies of people who are unemployed?

Though summarily neg'ing all of his policies does seem rather forceful and high handed. Banks have rules, laws and ethical policies to "usually" prevent presenting excessive difficulty to customers.

I'm sure that insurance is also supposed to be fair. To me, what they've done isn't.

Problem is you now have to declare the cancelled policy which will load policies.

I had a second policy that I built up on a Fiat Sedici, but when I sold the car I obviously didn't renew the policy. 18 months later I tried to get another second policy for my Suzuki and was told I couldn't use the no claims bonus from the Fiat. I didn't think to ask at the time, but I have since wondered, at what point did my No Claims Bonus evaporate :(

As I said earlier, most insurers allow 2 years gap to use NCB's on a new policy.

However this is down to the new insurer. Some won't recognise & some allow a little longer.

At the end of the day it comes down to price. Some renewals may be cheaper with a lower NCB. If your premium has already been loaded, any discount is just artificial anyway.

Perhaps they think you are non resident due to the time you are away.

Or maybe they think you have the cars with you.

I would be onto them ASAP and speak to someone at manager level.
