Featured Replies

Hi All

My road tax runs out at the end of August ........ do the dvla

automaticly send a renwal form ..... if so how close to the

end of the month do they send it .......

sorry to ask this but have had a company car for the last 25yrs

so never had to worry about before ...... thanks in advance to

any replies

Indeed they will send you a reminder providing you are the registered keeper according to the DVLA records.

My question is similar:

Having recently moved house and had a bit of a job getting my V5 back from the DVLA after changing addy etc, what happens if they don't send me a reminder?? Getting a bit nervy as my tax runs out end of August also........

p.s. Nice choice of car Pete

got my reminder today - tax runs out end of sept

if they dont..... just take your insurance cover note and car registration document (blue thing) to post orifice! If ur car is older than 3 yrs - take MOT certificate too

Not sure about GB but in NI we get 2 weeks grace to get our car tax. You still have to back tax to the beginning of the month though!. Also in N.I. you can't re-tax at post office if you are the new registered keeper of the car and you have to use the form the DVLA send out within 2 weeks of receipt. Consequently i've never managed to re-tax at the post office. Have to go into the tax office in town and join the queue.

Don't worry, sometimes they only arrive a week before they are due (prompt delivery by royal mail...not...). Mine runs out at the end of August and I only got my reminder this morning. You can now re-tax your car online...the DVLA will check computer databases to ensure you have a current MOT and insurance..have a look at the DVLA website for more info or a phone number if you are getting too close to expiry and are worried.

There is NO "grace period" in England, Scotland or Wales. There's also a curiousity in the law, often ignored, that you can't put the NEW tax disc on the car until the OLD one runs out. But I usually ignore that one...

yeah, its a bit daft that....I put mine in when I get it or else I'll forget to do it and knowing my luck get a fine. I think plod will only take a passing look at the big expiry date rather than working back when it is valid from.

I was impressed with the postal service amazingly enough.

Had reminder.Posted form + cheque + Insurance cert.+ MOT on Monday.

Tax disc+ docs returned thursday.Wow.

Thought I would never see my documents again.

At the end of the day the reminder is only a thing the DVLA does to help people not forget, if they don'tsend one it is still up to you to know when to buy the next one.

If only kwikfit sent out tyre reminders eh ;-)

The police gave me 2 weeks grace after I forgot to swap the discs about. It got changed after they knocked on my door telling me that they had kept an eye on it for 2 weeks and would I like to get some tax? My other option was get no tax and have the scrappy pick the car up. When the pick any car up, they write it off. Smash windows, chain through front, hoist it onto the lorry via crane then put crane through the roof. They do that on every car. And I've seen some nice cars get wrecked because of silly parking even.
