Fabia vrs - can they be clocked?

Featured Replies

Been looking at a vrs but the mileage doesn't add up. Service history stamp doesn't match the mot miles.

Are they easy enough to clock or give a slight haircut?

Or is it going to be an error on the mot which does happen time to time or a error with whoever wrote the service history book.... Or worse, it's clocked!

I heard they are pretty easy to clock. Not sure why any decent person would do that though.

I'll see what other people say, see what he says tomorrow and if it is clocked... Name and shame on the forum!

I know someone who has done it....

But as above, I don't agree with it at all!

Could be an error at the mot testers. I looked at my brothers mot certificate and last year his mileage was recorded at over 400,000.

This year it was recorded correctly

VCDS can do a mileage verification, using the ECU miles.  I have already verified one fabia vRS on this forum had 20k or so knocked off it.

It is VERY easy to do. :(

I know the old jabbasport car got clocked by about 50k miles iirc!

Very easy to do

Not the news I wanted to hear then really.

It's a vrs with 145,000 miles, checked mot and it says 144,00 at last mot.

Put the reg Into Google which brought up a previous advert with 163,000 miles and service history stamps from the Skoda dealer at around 161,000.

So it's somehow lost around 15,000 miles then :/

They should create some kind of Read only chip for this to stop this kind of thing...

Just re-thought what I said... The car has to "write" the mileage to it also... so it cannot be read only...

yes very easy to do, but what benefit would taking 15k off a 160k car really. I would think maybe a used dash or something might be a culprit there possibly.

There is software around to alter the mileage to whatever you want just a quick search on ebay will find some, vcds can verify the mileage that the engine ecu has done but i believe the modern dash software rewrites this to match as well.

A customer brought an octavia to us for a service having just bought it thru auction somewhere (proper auction not ebay) and I just felt it had done more then the 115K  the dash said, checked with vcds and it was around 250k or so, mot history checked out for the low miles but we think the prev owner just rolled it back 30k every year before the mot (later found it was a courier).

if it looks and feels wrong it probly is wrong

my thoughts also, strange to clock it really being high miles anyway. just have to see what he says tomorrow I guess!

I have a bad feeling about it now anyway so will more than likely leave it.

Unfortunately even this is not full proof as I have seen 'mileage correction' services that say they can alter the ECU miles as well.

I can't see 15k knocked off 160,000 being worth the effort tbh. Down to 100k then yeah but not that little.

Depends if that makes it blend in with "the pack" of other vehicles for sale. All too easy to determine an average mileage for the age of any car and tweak it so.  Also, whether the book is stamped for all services and how many might require "adjustment" to make the story fit.

The service history book is consistent with about 22,000 miles every year between mot's for the past 5 year... Apart from it's last mot which showed only 3,000 miles done that year.

This is the sort of thing that driveway traders can easily fall into, to attempt to make bigger margins. I've seen it done with my own eyes, and there are probably hundreds of people that do it.

Be wary of missing history, dodgy looking service books. These are the tell tale signs... as well as worn accelerator/brake/clutch pedal, gearknob & steering wheel, side bolsters. Although cosmetics can be changed and addressed, "losing" the history can often mean its been thrown away, to hide any mileage inserted on history documents. It's never going to go away (clocking) until its made physically impossible by the manufacturers.

Well, when trackers are mandated by the EU to make sure exceeding the speed limit no longer goes unpunished, as a bonus it will be able to upload the mileage regularly so at least you know cars haven't been clocked.

But this one just seems more like a cluster swap. 10% off the mileage is not that big a deal, but it does take it down a notch from being closer to 100k than 200k.

Why would anyone clock 15k off a 160k+ car, it's a waste of time. It could either be a dash swap or an MOT error but i'd be taking the print out of the other advert along, it could also be they've listed the wrong mileage in error on the current advert and it's innocent.

I've bought my 1.4 mpi with 55723 miles on the ckock! It's a 2001 reg and both previous owners were women's! Should I get concerned about mileage not being right? The mot certificates adds up to the mileage of the car however from the last mot the car was driven about 500 miles! When I plugged vcds it gave me the mileage on the clock ! Should that mean the vcds gave me the right mileage even if the car has been clocked up!? Thanks!

Not necessarily. If the MOT's add up and the cars condition generally reflects it's mileage then it's probably genuine. There are plenty of genuine low mileage older cars around.....especially small petrol cars that are often run by elderly motorists and do about 2,000 miles a year.

I spoke to the guy and told him what I know.

He didn't sound suprised and said it might of had some miles taken off it but he's not sure.

My mpi was 12 years old when I got hold of it, 1 elderly owner, 24k on the clock, stack of receipts and a stamped book having seen an annual service every 2k either at the main dealer or an independent specialist in it's later years. He'd then px'd it against a new Fabia at the same dealer. As long as the history/MOT's/receipts check out then don't worry. It's cases like Hutchysrs50 that you need to pay attention, I can't see any benefit to knocking 15k off a car with over 160k on it, value is perceived as low anyway so i'd suspect that he's added a lot more on before knocking it off. It's a stupid move considering it's obviously changed hands a few times and the reg shows up on google for the old advert.

Hi! Thanks for the reply! My car was a bit of bidding if to take it or not! Obvious eBay! Had paid decent money for it and had full service and all the brakes changed! The condition of the car is good with no rusts at all but odd chips and scratches everywhere! If I consider selling the car how much you think this will worth! I have changed the headlamps with newer hella made ones to make it look better! I've recently seen one for sale at 1000 pounds with 125k on the clock! Cheers
