Power steering pump noise on full lock?

Featured Replies

I haven't fully investigated this, so sorry for any half diagnosis. Basically on full right lock today whilst turning around I heard the pump, the noise is kind of like a flow of high pressure hydraulic noise, which is probably is. You know the noise!

Anyway, I haven't tried it doing a left hander but I'm assuming this is normal?

However I'm pretty sure I've never heard this on any other car I've owned. I actually heard it over the radio - which wasn't that loud to be fair.

Anyone know if this is ok?

It will be the fluid bypassing when the steering rack hits the stop. Just check the fluid is at the correct level.

But the mkII has electric power steering?

Definitely doesn't feel electric!

Ephs possibly (electro hydraulic) basically an electric pump instead of an engine driven one, it's not fully electric assisted though I think, need to shove my head under there for a good look, mk3 has a good rack drive electric system though lol

Nope, it's purely electric.

The mk2? That's insane. Last car I drove with electric steering was a clio. Felt like I was driving with a computer simulator wheel.

Wholly electric steering in a Renault, what could possibly go wrong?
