Suspension

Featured Replies

ok whats the diff between coil covers and normall suspension to lower a car, i mean how would i be able to lower my car more than 35mm :) thanks

Leon

The basic difference with coilovers is the strut is essential a big screw, with a pair of "bolts" into which the spring sits (like the spring sits in standard cup on oem suspension)

As these bolts can be unscrewed/screwed up, the height is variable. Mine will go from 90mm lower than OEM, to 30mm above OEM. dread to think what 30mm above OEM would look like?!

Suggest you get on the list for Josh's sump guard group buy then! ;)

On coilovers, how low do you reckon could you go without having to change the sump guard, or in danger of smashing it on bumps etc...??

Cheers

Well, my front is set to approx (not sure) 70mm below OEM, maybe 75mm. This is more or less as low as it can go without getting wheel arch rub every time I tried to corner (especially at speed) I have also (as has Josh I suspect ;)) rubbed the plastic undertray several times on speedbumps, and other things.

Oh Josh! I just threw my old plastic undertray in a skip. ;) Thats confidence for you.

what the hell is a sump gaurd, i thought that was the thing to protect the engine :o

So around 50mm would be ok with a vRS on 17's? (Are coilovers even available for the vRS??!!) The Eibach kit does make them look alot better, but I dont think theyre quite low enough.........

Leon - Do you realise how low to the ground your engine becomes when you lower it 75mm. ;) I could take a photo to show you, actually i will in a minute.

I should think 50mm on a vRS would be fine. My coilovers are also the same ones for the vRS. They're so damned stiff that the issue of engine weight etc on the front is of little importance. Although having said that I now need to raise the front a bit to compensate for the lumpy weight I've just shoved in the engine bay. :o

does the same goes to a 1.4 100bhp?

A good Q, and one which I'm not sure of. I think the sumps of the diesels sit a little lower, but its still something to consider if dropping it that far. We'd only be talking a couple of cm higher maybe, and you never know when you'd hit that speedbump a little too quick. ;)
