Tyre wear - new ones required

Featured Replies

Having just come up on 10k miles I can see that my original fit 225x40x18 Continental Sport Contact 2 have only a few thou left on them.

Can anybody recommend a suitable replacement which will maybe give me a few more miles without losing any of the wet grip and maintaining the quiet running.

cheers.

Nope. Too many variables. Been looking for that Holy Grail since the 1970's. I go for mid price mid range nowadays.

The Michelin Energy savers on my Octavia have done 20,000 miles and the rears are still like new and the fronts look to have at least another 10,000 miles left in them. Very hard wearing and wet grip is fantastic. However they will cost you.

It might also be worth getting a 4 wheel alignment done.

If you want a long lasting tyre look at the treadwear rating on the side wall. The higher the number the harder the tyre. This ranges from 200 to 500 for normal tyres.

Agree with Michelin energies if you want a high mile tyre. However some find they are not as grippy if you drive hard and they are useless in snow.

All tyres are a compromise. The Contis and Dunlops fitted by Skoda are shorter lasting tyres.

Good offer on Michelins at the moment and these tend to give more miles than some of the other brands.

It runs out at the end of April so you need to get in quick. I've ordered 4 for our Scout, which means a £70 fuel card back.

I guess for the 225/40 R18, you will be looking at Pilot Sport 3's.

Thanks all for your help. It really is a bit of a minefield. I remember the days when you just bought tyres that would give you 20k plus and work in both summer and winter.

Khumos every time for me. The Aldi of the tyre world [emoji3]

If you want longevity then buy Energy Saver/+, the grip in the warm/dry is fine, in the cold/wet it's not so great but as long as you're careful they shouldn't cause you any issues. It's the snow that has got to be experienced to be believed, hills that can easily be climbed with other tyres on are impassable.

It seems the Energy Savers don't like cold temperatures. I've never really tested that aspect of their performance, but my previous tyres were 4 Pirelli P6000's and the Michelin Energy Savers are miles better. Wet grip with the Pirellis was non existent, and I found them quite dangerous towards the end.....although they still had 2mm of tread left. An awful tyre considering their price.

I've put Michelin PS3's on my VRS. I've always found Michelin to be long lasting. The original Dunlop's I had were rubbish.

I've recently had dealing with matador tyres  on a volvo V70 - seem very good and reasonable for the price!
