yellow light on audi

Featured Replies

Good evening

A friend of mine has an audi a3 tdi and a yellow light like an exhaust is illuminated in the centre of his dashboard.

Any ideas what it is and how to rectify

Thanks andy

Dpf. Has the car gone into limp mode? If not a blast up the motorway should sort it.

I take the symbol is a rectangle with spots in it and a bit coming off either end

Yes that's it, I will let him know. He said people have mentioned a liquid to pour in the tank??

Go at a steady speed up the motorway for a few miles. That should stick it into regeneration mode.

I dont know what liquid people could be talking about? Theres no liquid that helps regen a dpf

You can buy a dpf cleaner that goes into the fuel. That will be what they mean no doubt

The liquid will be urea.  The advice would be fine if they were talking about a Mercedes BlueTec diesel engine, but is irrelevant to VAG diesel engines.  Read all about it here.

Oh right, thats new to me. I stand corrected :).

Your mate could read the handbook...

He's only asking.

Most blokes don't actually DO reading of  handbooks anyway as it IS actually against male law.

Ha ha thanks for your help I knew I would get advice both positive and in good humour!!

I agree about the hand book though if it happened to my s4 I would be at their door ASAP

Well spotted. Iv never spotted such a thing tbh

I am curious to what it actually does though. Raises the exhaust temps in some way to help regen? Hmm? I may go away and google :) haha.

Urea is adblue isn't it?

Near enough for government work anyway. In which case it goes in a separate tank, on vehicles that are equipped to use it (and A3 TDis aren't).

Not all DPF's work the same.

PSA (Peugeot & Citroen), Ford, Volvo (and several others) use a liquid called eoly additive to assist with the regeneration process. It basically assists the DPF to get up to the required temperature to successfully burn off the soot.

Similar to the off-the-shelf additives you can buy, the eoly is fed mixed with the diesel fuel. Is is automatically fed into the fuel tank each time the car is refuelled.

The fluid has it's own separate container or bag and needs topping up throughout the cars life (depending on the number of times the car is refuelled. If you fill up before the tank is empty then the eoly fluid will need topping up more regularly) and as such is detailed as a service item / requirement.

Although eolis isn't the same thing as "adblue".
