With a DSG gear box is it possible to........

Featured Replies

....select  "R" or "P" whilst moving forward. ( even when you have nearly stopped )

I know the box is designed not to destroying itself by not allowing low gears to be selected when travelling quite fast.

I haven't tried to find out by the way, just curious

I don't think you can select R or P without pressing the brake pedal, so hopefully the answer is no.

I'm certainly not going to try on my DSG.

I don't know - and I don't intend to try it!

However, the Owner's Manual states:

Information for driving with the automatic gearbox DSG

Never move the selector lever into position R or P when driving - risk of an

accident!

Sounds like it's a definite no-no.

Hi!

I have shifted from D to R and vice versa while holding the foot on the brake pedal but still moving slowly and I haven't noticed any hesitation from the gearbox, when I move the foot from the brake pedal it just feels as if you let go of the clutch with a manual gearbox and the car comes to a halt before it starts to move in the new direction. Nothing dramatic at all but then again, we talk about very slow speeds like just crawling back or forth while parking in a very tight spot.

Have a nice weekend!

Not sure what would happen if you put it in R. The gearbox may not physically engage R when moving forward to protect itself. If you selected P then in theory the front wheels would both lock, causing a spectacular emergency stop.......however in reality I suspect the Park mechanism would just get destroyed and you'd find yourself coasting along in neutral.

Both can be done (but engaging P from D is definitely not recommended!)

If you select R from D it will act very similar to a manual gearbox, i.e. go into neutral with the car still moving forward then as the clutch dis-engages, reverse gear will stop forward momentum and slowly start reversing.

Engaging P is not recommended (but is possible) but would bring the car to a very abrupt stop, and may damage the car as it engages a pawl with a toothed wheel in the transmission.
