Fuel gauge accuracy?

Featured Replies

I have always suspected that my 2013 Fabia 1.2 TSI has some sort of problem with its reported fuel figures. I know from the past that the fuel figures need to settle over a period of time before they make sense. I have now done over 2000 miles.

This is my third Fabia, and this one is not as easy to believe as the previous two.

Let me try to explain this.

1 - Last Saturday I had approx half a tank (or a little over that) - I topped up with 25 litres. This then showed a full tank.

2 - Toggling the stalk controls revealed that I had a range of 330 miles left (despite the fact that the last known average figure at the time of the refill was 44 mpg.(2)

3 - On Sunday I then did a journey of approx 40 miles. On checking the mileage left - this had increased to 385!

4 - Today a journey of approx 10 miles was made, and once again the mileage changed, and was showing a new figure of 325. At this point the average MPG (2) was showing 46.

To my simple mind this is just not believable. I appreciate that the mileage left is a variable, that will be influenced by the driving habits of owner, but the figures do not stack up.

If we go back to 2 - if my average mpg was recorded as 44 at the time of refill, I would expect that the amended figure of mileage range should have increased to approx 400 to 460 miles.

My manual record (brim to brim etc.) seems about right - it is just the mileage range figure that does not seem to make sense.

I would be interested to learn from other members about any recorded fuel inaccuracies that they have experienced.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think you described it very well,

that is how a vRS behaves as well in my experience.

I have noticed that on mine, the range computer is very fast to react. About maybe a month or so ago now I did a return trip from Bangor after seeing a friend at uni. Filled up at the Tesco right next to the junction. about 160ish miles later, I had averaged 56MPG (I was quite heavy footed across the north welsh coast and calmed down once in the traffic of the M6). Pulled up at home with a range of 380. Which was about right.

2 days later (pottering around town during the day and returning from work late at night across town) it had shot down to 220. 2 days after that, 180. And that seemed to stay spot on as until refueling it was all town driving like this.

I think it's a little nuts tbh. I tend to only look at Oil temp or Avg. Consumption (1).  (I use (1) as it tells me from my daily driving whether I need to calm down on the go pedal  :giggle: ). Range only ever gets used either when i'm low on fuel and using it up fast, or when I know it's quite accurate (from my driving style).

Mine does this too. I dont know why, its not very accurate at all haha.

I also reset my trip every time i full. I can get 400 miles out of a tank, yet the computer never seems to think i can

It is much better than some others I think. Mine usually gives a range of 360 miles from a tank (vRS) which is does with normal driving. I've achieved between 3-400 depending on driving style. Most of my driving is a 10 mile each way commute in moderate traffic and weekend use. When vented recently on a long steady 70mph run I got 450 before bottling it and refilling.
