Polo GTI 1.8t

Featured Replies

thinking of replacing the fabia with a polo gti 1.8t

is there anything to look out for or avoid? any bad engine codes etc..

any one on here any experience with tuning one?

thanks for any info :)

If its a 1.8t you can't really go wrong

All decent engines

I think they are 150bhp??

Why not an ibiza cupra 1.8t, they are 180bhp and probably loads cheaper with fmic and ap 4 pot brakes as standard

Plus it doesnt look like a small golf?

I had a 2007 Polo Gti before my current Fabia vRS 1.9.

Very similar to the Fabia but more toys (esp and tyre pressure monitor as standard).

There is only one engine code for the 1.8t in the Polo but I cannot remember it, they come with the K03s turbo. A stage 1 map takes them to about 200 ponies which makes them nippy as they weigh a lot less than the Fabia (1160 kg iirc).

They realistically do about 20mpg less than the Fabia so 28 to 32 mpg running around which means about 250 miles per tank. Also road tax is pretty steep, £270 ish per year?

In the end that's why I sold mine for the Fabia to reduce my running costs.

On the 1.8t make sure the cambelt & water pump are changed every 4 years or 60k miles.

Theyre awesome.

Id take the old 1.8t over the new 1.4 tsi engine any day.

As said. The 1.8t is reliable, and has the potential to produce decent power not too much hassle.

The 1.8t is petrol mate

Will set off like S*** off a shovel I bet. But I wouldn't like to watch that fuel gauge twitching towards the E ...

£270 seems an awful lot for tax even considering it is a 1.8T !

Sounds like you have your cross hairs pinned on one though, I hope it serves you well!

Well worth the money though haha.

Especially if you can afford a few mods to get the power upped

Fixed in bold

Are these a fwd or just two?

They are fwd so just two. Great tuning capability though. My old Octavia 1.8t 4x4 used to shift with this engine at 225bhp - in something a few hundred kg lighter it'll go like stink once on the move! :)

I didnt think the petrol Cupra came with the FMIC?

Sorry meant to be '4wd' . I knew what I meant :P

Just thinking about the 1.8T S3, the quattro is 4WD isn't it, a friend of mine has one and it is ridiculous. A big hybrid and an rs6 intake, forged engine to take the strain... Can't remember the exact number but it's 300 and something at the wheel.

Although the 1.8T 4wd must be even heavier on fuel that the Polo. Could be an alternative if it will just be an occasional fun car.

JRJG

S3 quattro is part time 4WD yes.

I like them, wouldn't own one myself, can't help but think they look a tiny bit girly, but almost bought one for the mrs at one stage.

Yeah, that's the car all of us using seat sport coolers had on it originally I think. 180 Petrol/160 Diesel

I had a chat with a lad that owned one the other day. He said he spends £70 a week in petrol and lives just 4 miles from work. He said it does about 18mpg but his was tuned and running 231bhp. Did sound nice and the flames it popped were cool but the torque of hybrid Fabia made it that little bit quicker ;)

That doesnt make sense from my experience. Used to run nearly 230bhp and 235lb/ft torque (JabbaSport remap and various minor hardware changes) and get 25+ mpg from my far heavier 4wd Octavia 1.8t. 30mpg was achievable if trying. :)

it must be ****ed if it's only doing 18mpg. My old VRS R-tech stage 1 would be in the high 40's on my 8 mile commute to work.

Once mapped mine was pretty quick in a straight line, but handled similar to a Fabia in the bends, e.g. not that good.

I got a Revo remap which made it difficult to make a quick standing start, as the throttle pedal was set up to give full power at about 30% travel.

Unfortunately Revo don't do a 'linear throttle map' for this engine code.

If you want more than 200bhp, you need an uprated down pipe, FMIC and fuel pressure regulator IIRC, that takes them to about 230 ish bhp.

Mate had a polo gti and took it to stage 2 and it ran a 0-60 time of 5.8 at Gti international, also handled like a go kart

My 1.8t octavia manages 180 on £40 of fuel (now both rear calipers arent binding) which is around 30mpg so a little polo should be better if driven sensibly

To be fair to him it's probably the way he drives it, he didn't seemed to fussed about economy when he caught up with me at a fair rate of knots!

they are 150 bhp ..... not a seat fan though so would prefer a polo with a forge  intercooler etc.....

i know its not going to be as fuel efficient as the fabia but im not going to be doing the same mileage it will be a car for kicking about in on a weekend without paying a fortune for the insurance

it looks like there a pretty solid car though not much bad said about them and seem pretty easy to get to around 230 bhp

You'll be looking at around 36/37mpg combined

Thats what i got on my octy vrs. So being a polo and being lighter id expect around 40mpg driving sensibly. 30mpg driving not so sensibly!

So about 35mpg average which isn't too bad! With a 210bhp remap it will be bloody quick!

I know my 180bhp octy vrs went to 210bhp (so you think 30bhp increase) but looking at the graph at 4,000rpm instead of 120bhp it was kicking out 190bhp (70bhp increase)

So going from 150bhp to 210bhp you'll probably see a 90-100bhp increase at around 4,000rpm which will be one hell of a difference
