What is the best (basic) HU for a 2006 Octavia?

Featured Replies

I have the original Stream (non MP3 version) with autochanger in the boot. I have looked at the Swing? and others (310 / 315) but there doesn't seem to be a thread that covers the exact features of all the radios available... I don't care about Sat-Nag as I have an android phone with Tomtom on it (soon to be replaced by a newer model). Ideally I guess I would like MP3 capability and DAB with the facility to use USB / SD cards (either natively or with something like the yatour / dension / eonon media adapters). Not bothered about bluetooth especially either... Epray seems to have plenty of VW RCD310's at reasonable money but I guess I would need a CAN gateway update for any of these...? I have VCDS so I can do this myself I guess its just the extra cost versus buying a Chinese HU (Eonon etc)...

All advice gratefully received!

Chris

Bolero may be your best bet.

SD card, 6-disc changer built in, decent screen (on newer versions), compatible with all car features (PDC, OPS,etc.)

BT can be added separately later if you change your mind.

But don't think there are any native DAB Bolero units though. I think only the latest Columbus & some Anundsen units are.

Otherwise it's other manufacturers such as Kenwood or Chinese clones.

If your car is early 2007 or older you'll need a CAN gateway upgrade and some if the newer units won't be compatible anyway due to the protocols they use.

A Columbus will be as this can use BAP or CAN to communicate and there is a modified firmware freely available that obviates the need for a CAN upgrade.

Cheers,

I have looked at the Bolero / VW equivalent and it is more expensive (even secondhand on Epray)... Initially I thought about switching to the Stream MP3 version but the sound quality isn't supposed to be very good (same with the Audience / Nexus etc) and I am not exactly overwhelmed by the non MP3 version I have now... I was looking at the newer Swing units as they are cheapish, can play MP3's and I could add the USB functionality in later (at least I think so!). I have looked at the OEM style units from Eonon (GM5152 / 5153) but would like to hear off anyone that has had one a while to see what they think of them before going down that route.

In regard to the bolero, is there a difference in functionality between various versions? I have seen at least two different codes ending either in an f or an m... Is there anything to watch out for? I have found a used can gateway from a breakers for silly money - 1K0907530AD. So I'll attempt to use VCDS to program that when it arrives!

Welcome to Briskoda :)

Bolero didn't have a DAB to the best of my knowledge.

There can be an issue with Boleros going into older cars too: the screen can remain stupidly dim all the time (think in terms of "night mode" during the day, and then even darker at night), plus I found the menu structure to be overly complicated to use whilst driving a car. I replaced my Bolero with an RCD310DAB and an MDI kit (for usb) worked fine for me, had it connected to a Nokia CK7W phone kit too (will be again now the car is with my dad). I'm not sure if the RCD310 needs a CANBus gateway update though, as there's no "extras" like on Columbus and Amundsen. Mine was on a L revision gateway though. That notwithstanding, I have just picked up an AF revision for £50 off eBay for the Scout (which is on a K revision). The K has been happy with my RNS315, so I can't see any reason it wouldn't be bappy with a RCD310.

My RCD310 didn't want to talk to the CD changer, but that was fairly irrelevant with the MDI/USB kit.

As Stream is a different shape (unless you went for a Bolero) you'd also need a new fasica too

or

http://www.skodaparts.com/product/octavia-radio-trim-for-sat-nav-2004-2008-50284

....depending on what a/c system you've got.

Did you fit the mdi yourself as you can probably get the cd changer working with the addition of an extra wire in the loom...

RainbowFire :) Thanks that is really useful info! I looked at the RCD310 as this would be a cheap upgrade to my Stream HU. Is there a Skoda version of this? Is it the Swing by any chance? Out of interest, what file / directory limitations are there with the MDI kit? Is it limited to 32gb like pretty much everything else...

I think my facia is the first one as I have the dualzone a/c but do Skoda do it in different colours? I could of sworn I had seen a picture with an inlay that matches my trim (a sort of silver with a diamond grid pattern in it).

I did, but given that the 310 takes MP3 CDs and the MDI runs USB, in my humble opinion, it seems fairly pointless. Plus, I got the MDI a few weeks after I got the 310 so it was running on the original loom. The pin-out sticker on top of the 310 does show NC for all the pins related to the CD changer, however the changer still had physical functionality.....I could load and unload CDs.

Other than the shape the Swing does look very much like a 310. However, I have no experience of the Swing. It does look like the Swing replaced the Stream though, as the entry-level h/u. (Although I could be wrong.) As the shape is the same as a Stream, looks like there would be no need to replace the fascia either. ;)

So far, DAB has always been a black FAKRA connector on the back of the unit, towards the top left-ish as you look at the back of the unit.

(As seen on RCD310, RNS315 and RNS510)

I was running a 16gB stick without any problems. My structure is a fairly flat one though: I have odd tracks in the root, with artists then albums when I have complete albums.

e.g.

Root

|   |

|   Fleetwood Mac

|   |   |

|   |   Rumours

|   |   |

|   |   Tusk

|   |

|   Mike Oldfield

|      |

|      Amarok

|      |

|      Man On The Rocks

|         |

|         CD1 - Release

|         |

|         CD3 - Demos

|

(lots of odd tracks)

I try and keep the structure fairly somple so I don't have to faff around whilst the car is in motion ;)

I use a 16gB card in my RNS315 and find it plenty of space for a couple of week's worth of music. Although that is all down to personal preference and how much music you want to carry around.

I did try a HDD on it, but I don't think the MDI gives quite enough juice to run the drive as it just sat there clicking.

If you have a poke around on their website, there are a couple of variations in colour and materials.

Yes agree its defo overkill but I like things to work even though I haven't used in since ha ha....

When I traced the wires in the mdi piggy back loom I found that only one of changer's pins wasnt actually connected to the head unit (the physical switch on). I then googled "mdi" and the pin number and found this:

http://www.mytreg.com/index.php?/topic/7113-install-rns510-media-in-mdi-interface-into-centre-console/

When I added the wire as suggested, it worked happily. And although I probably switch on both the mdi and cd player when I select either, I would only be selecting to play content on one so it doesnt matter.

In my case too the cd changer still had power to do the loading etc. as you found, even before I connected the wire.

I have Bolero fitted in my 06 plate L&K

Luckily i didn't have to replace CANBUS unit

Works like a charm:)

I've connected it to my rockford fosgate 12 inch x2 woofer via Kicker mono block + Aftermarket Infinity Components and speakers via JBL digital 4 ch amp

Amazing sound:)

I fitted a Bolero to my 2007 Octy and did have to replace my Canbus. The lighting on the unit during bright days is easily sorted by switching on your sides and switching them off again. I have had the unit for over a year and love the fact I have a 32GB card with all my music and some available all the time. It was also a straight sway from the stream mp3 although I did buy an adaptor fakra I believe as there are 2 radio inputs on the Bolero compared to 1 on the stream

Gents,

So everything is now here (Swing MP3 unit -Nav sized, New Fascia, Fakra adapter - dual to single, Alleged CAN gateway 1K0...AD) and so I fired up VCDS and found out I have an F revision gateway currently. Does anyone know of a guide to VCDS - CAN upgrades with screenshots, as I am not 100% sure of what I need to capture before swapping units.

I have captured the following screenshots but think I need more possibly?

All help much appreciated!

Chris

Pretty much all you need with newer gateways is a list of what controllers are installed, which you have.

There's little else to worry about.

Yeah the newer ones are done through the installation list, not coding.

Oh and a couple of the controller numbers are different. (IIRC steering angle sensor is no longer 00)

If you're lucky, the gateway will be behind the glovebox. If not, you'll have to do some dis-assembley under the bonnet, but it doesn't take long and is really easy.

Cheers Guys!

So basically I just need to re-tick the same options (being aware that some may have different number vales) and that is it!?!? Wow easier than I thought :)

Thanks,

Hopefully if it ever stops raining I'll get it done over the next few days.

Chris

That's all I recall doing once I changed my CAN Gateway.

All done! It appears to have been as easy (relatively) as suggested. I removed the glovebox (diconnected the air hose and the light) and tipped it on its side to avoid having to disconnect the airbag switch. Immediately found the canbus gateway on its bracket so I then unclipped it and undid the connector. Next bit was to connect the new gateway and power up the system (plug in VCDS) and look at what was in it. Turns out it is off a VW and was as advertised a 1K0...AD unit :)

I then checked through the options (only about three or four options needed adding) and coded the module. Autoscan and clear faults, all done! Test radio (entered code received from ebay) and relief all round as everything works first time.

Only question remaining is that in the long coding I noticed the car is set as a VW etc, is this important? The workshop and importer codes are different to my old ones as well (and I can't see an obvious way to change them as they are greyed out?).

I have noticed the outer buttons on my steering wheel (Volume up / down and station / track up / down) no longer work... Any ideas?

It might need telling there is a mfsw in the coding for the new radio. Also suggest rechecking the coding for the steering wheel module.

Hmmm I can't communicate with my 04 Steering angle sensor (used to be 00) even though it shows up with no faults on an autoscan, I can't get most of the buttons to work on the steering wheel (even less are working now after some experimentation!).

Is my only solution to stick the old gateway on and grab the long coding screenshots from it? As far as I can see everything is right (I have changed all the odd bits in the long coding that didn't tally e.g. VW to Skoda and type to hatchback etc.

Not going as well as I initially thought lol.
