Has anybody had a polo before?

Featured Replies

Its just the 5 doors across the range that have the leaky rear carrier

Buy a 3 door ibiza and your sorted (front doors do sometimes leak too but not to the extent of the rears)

Worst case scenario its a couple of hours and some roof and gutter sealant for a fiver

1.2 3 cyl engines are fine.

My bro's 52 plate polo made it to 103k before he sold it and all it needed engine wise was 1 coil pack at circa £30!

Hardly the end of the world really

  • I love SDI cars.  Hugely under rated.

  • The Fabia suffers from the leaky rear door problem.....easy fix though. I don't think the Polo is immune from leaking either from what I've read.

  • How so?   You could just as easily say the vRS Fabia is a bit Chav spec!

I would just like to say a really big thank you to everybody who has put in a comment so far, it really is appreciated. If you think of any more comments or anybody wants to jump in for the first time, please, if you can spare the time, do so.

Thats another story

But i can't see a 21 year old girl coming from a saxo that wants a polo being happy with a fabia 5 door in comfort spec with steel wheels

All imo of course

We've already had the Fabia discussion - my father in law has one - I was told........................she wants a Polo.

Yes, she has a year and 4 months of NCB.

Well that one year combined with being 21 is going to be enough for insurance easily, I'd be surprised if it was otherwise.

The four months however... I am not certain if that will be of any use, possibly if she just changes her policy and stays with the same insurer then the four months will continue to roll, but if she swaps insurers I am quite sure the four months will be made void unfortunately, that's what happened to eight months of my no claims anyway when I had to change my insurer due to LV not insuring vRS's until I was 23.

Why not a Lupo? They're pretty smart.

I am only guessing here as I haven't asked, but she will probably say "I don't like round headlamps", but a good point just the same. I think this is going to be one of those "which one wears down first" discussions

Just to say thanks again for all your input - none of it is wasted or has fell on deaf ears.

I had a 1.4TDi 9n 3 door Polo before I got my Fabia. Good little car, loved it, especially after a remap! All it needed while I had it was consumables. The rear footwells did get a bit wet so needed sealing too.

Other than that a great little car and good on insurance/tax too.

Please excuse my ignorance here, but is a 9N the facelift version, or the round headlamp version?.

Edit:- don't worry, just googled it to find it is round lamp version - I quite like them, I think she may have to compromise here to get a good one

Never liked the Pre Facelift ones.

I always thought the 9N was a much more pleasant looking motor than the N3- bland in comparison. Competent motor though. Someone touched on the idea of the 1.4tdi 3 cylinder which is a belting little engine. Worth learning the art of double de-clutching for the sound on down changes. A decent one will be right at the top of the budget mind, if not beyond.

I bought my other half a 1.9 TDI 9N Polo as her first car. It was a great little motor and she loved it.

However it had a few of the standard Fabia faults - leaking power steering which was a right pain to check and refill and binding rear brake calipers. Her small womanly hands managed to get in to change the bulbs though, once I'd pulled the battery box and fuel filter out.

I ran a 54 plate Polo SDi for 173k.  Not the quickest car in the world, but overall it returned 54 to the gallon including a lot of miles with learners at the wheel.  It was pretty much bombproof.  The only real problem was when the Alternator free-wheel pully went solid and it kept snapping tensioning pulley bolts until we found the cause.  Insurance is low (it was about group 4 if I remember rightly).  With a bsic engine like that there is very little to go wrong.

I would say that the build quality on the Fabia SDi I had before was marginally better, but I am being very picky when I say that.  In some way the Fabia was better, in others the Polo.

I love SDI cars.

Well after spending nearly 2 days lining up a list of cars to see this weekend without round headlamps, my daughter came home from her new job and said "my friend at work has a Polo with round headlamps and I really like it".

God love 'em. Looked at some right pig Lupos because my eldest didn't like the Arosa. Then she saw one in a local garage and had it.

Coming up for sale in the next few weeks is my best mates polo gt. He's owned it since new on a 54 reg. It's on 185k at the moment, it's had a new turbo at 120k and has always been serviced on time with 504 or 507 spec oil by a vag trained mechanic.

This is the 1.9tdi 130bhp model, 1 of 600 made. It's in reflex silver. The only bad bits are the rear wheel arch lips and the lip of the bootlid are starting to bubble but this is common and easily fixed.

I know it's high mileage but this is rare car and I'd think you'll be surprised how cheap the insurance is compared to say the 1.2.

It still pulls like a train and is totally original. I'm going to be detailing it soon ready for sale so I can take pics if needed.

Only reason he's selling is because he couldn't turn down a lease octavia vrs at work, fully maintained and insured for £125 a month!!

Haha! Sounds about right eh.

There really isnt much difference between the pre and post facelift is there. Just different lights front and back and a tape player instead of cd iirc

The base models really are poverty spec though. Wind up front windows etc etc.

Are the 6n 1.4 16v the ones with the chocolate pedal boxes? I know one of them has the issue....

This is getting so hard to keep on track with what my daughter wants at the moment. We went to see a Polo at a dealers in Thurrock yesterday, she wasn't sure about the Polo, but fell in love with the 05 plate 1.25 Fiesta parked next to it.

I might have bought it but after reading some reviews on-line of the dealers after-care, I am a little bit hesitant to part with cash there.

All I can say is ...........my head hurts.

Sounds like your having a bad do mate.

Something will catch her eye and satisfy you both soon enough :).

The the 6n2. The 6n2 GTI had a recall by VW to fix it (shame about the gearboxes...!)

My two pence. I went from a Fabia to a 6n2 Polo, and there's a huge difference in refinement and general feeling of interior quality in the Fabia's favour. Better seating position too. That said, I much preferred my 6n2, and it was faultless (something the Fabia could only aspire too).

I'd be looking at the 9n platformed cars rather than the 6n2/Lupo if they're in budget.

Some years ago I test drove a 2005 Polo..petrol but cannot remember the engine size. Nippy and good driving position but I thought that the gear box pattern was awful.

You were either in the groove or in the wrong gear. :(

Ok, we are now the proud owner of an 05 plate mk 6 Fiesta. Only issue with it at moment is that it only has one key.

Is it a big issue to get sorted if anyone has had a recent Fiesta before, or could our key man on here possibly do it?.

I think they have a chip in that has to match the car.

£80 for my old boss to get a spare for his Renault trafic.
