Fitting a Towbar to a Mk2 vs Mk1

Featured Replies

Right. Today I tried, and almost completed fitting a towbar to my MK2 VRS Estate.

Now I have fitted towbars to oth my previous Octavia Estates, both Mk1's I should add. Fitting them to the Mk1 takes what... an hour max, bumper off, rear beam thing off, wires in (granted piggy backing off the stock loom) minor cut on the bumper and voila!

The Mk2 is a totally different, i think I had to take almost every single piece of the trim out of the boot up to and including the side panel bits of the rear seats. During this woderful day of discovery i found a few screws were actually missing from the factory. The little plastic bits the screws go into are totally untouched. Luckily i had some spare trim screws so these missing bits were replaced. Buy by christ it was a mammoth task compared to the MK1. Mainly because you cant get to the bumper bolts without removing interior trim. And to get to the bolts that go through the chassis you have to drop the exhaust and the heat shield.

I had to give up when the wires that go into the fuse box wouldnt fit and whoever fitted the parrot kit took up the spare power fom the fuse box anyway. I will re-visit this tomorrow now to complete it even though its 13 pin and my trailer has a 7 pin socket so i will need ot get an adapter plug.

If I were to do it again I would pay someone to fit it, and its staying on the car when i sell it thats for sure.

Did you release the purple lever on the back of the fuse box before inserting the new wires?

The whole thing is purple? But no am I about to look silly?

The whole purple thing locks the wires into the back of the fuse box. There is tricksy little lever (also purple) which you have to release (moves sideways?) Which opens up the spares holes to fit the connector into. I think you have to push it in then slide across, it has a catch on it.

Yep done it. Thanks.

What towbar did you go for? I'm thinking about getting one to use with a bike carrier.

It was a detachable swan neck very similar to the Westfalia one, I think it was just re-branded, with a can-bus wiring kit. It looks really good, though it doesn't quite fold up away, and it has a 13 pin euro socket as opposed to the 7 pin my trailer uses but adapters are only 5 quid or so off ebay.

My Ocatvia VRS has a removable tow bar fitted by Skoda for the previos owner. Its a Witter and must admit is absolutley spot on for what i need it for, putting my DH bike onto the Witter bike carrier. Only problem i have is that the tow bar is 7 pin and the bike rack is 13 pin so needs an adapter but where the electrics are hidden underneath the car the cable drags the floor so need to get the plugs swapped so i can loose the adapter.
