Left foot braking

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I got a bit of a shock the other day after going through a flooded section of road. I did the usual trick of applying the brakes very gently with my left foot to clear the water from the discs, a technique learnt years ago when rallying a mini  . The car didn't quite stand on it's nose but the deceleration was a real surprise.

After some experimentation, it seems that if the brakes are applied the management system cuts fuel to the engine to reduce power, possibly switched on the brake light activating.

I fully understand that this could be considered a safety feature as it ensures that in an emergency stop the engine is not fighting the brakes.

Question is, can this be disabled or reduced in VCDS as there are occasions when I like to use the left foot braking to help control the car in long corners and it doesn't help if the engine power is cut or reduced.

TIA

I don't believe it can be adjusted at all with VCDS.

This feature is common among all modern cars, and is a basic ECU function to cut the fuel when you apply the brake. I think it is primarily to cut emissions and increase MPG.

It is possible to have left-foot braking enabled: IIRC Shark have an ECU "adjustment" for this :)

Brilliant, thanks for the info.

On some cars if you keep the brakes applied & pump the throttle then power is re-applied to the engine & left foot braking is possible. This works on my MK4 Golf but not on Mk3 Octavia.

Aha, I'll give that a try.
