vrs tsi tyre speed rating

Featured Replies

My car should be built this week so very shortly I'll look to get a tyre for the spare (full size) rim I've already sorted.  I was intending to get a Goodyear efficient grip as I've been impressed with them on my old MONDEO, however I've just noticed the highest speed rating for them is W.  Doesn't the vrs come with Y rated boots?  Is Y required?  W is up to 186 mph if I looked it up correctly, which the car can't do legally in the UK or physically manage (100 mph tail winds and 15% down slopes aside).  If it needs Y to be legal/ pass the mot when time comes then I'll get a different tyre, but does anybody know what is actually required?

Thanks.

W/Y are effectively the same and pretty much completely interchangeable.

If it's a temporary spare wheel limited to 50mph it'll be fine with it being different, otherwise it'll need to be same as the other one on the axle to be legal and also you'd need to check with your insurance if you want to change speed ratings, even if they're above waht the car is capable of or what is legal....

VAG need to do what other manufacturers do and actually provide the minimums for the car. This is the sticker off my (not particularly slow) Subaru. Tyre sizes along with minimum load and speed ratings, with a clearly displayed alternative for winter tyres. No worrying about what might or might not be suitable.

Our other car is a different brand and has a similar plate again with minimum speed and load ratings.

My O3 estate has something just like that inside the fuel flap though not sure it goes down to speed rating detail.

Nelly,  as i said, it's a full size spare.  I will be buying 2 identical tyres. One will sit in storage while the other sits on the rim in the boot. When the OEM front tyres wear the best of the worns will get swapped to the spare and the 2 new tyres fitted as a pair to the car.

Back to the question though, does anyone know if W rating is compliant with legal requirements and Skoda guidelines?   I'm guessing they are.  I'd rather not guess though, and if in doubt I'll go for a Y rated tyre.

I answered this, W and Y are more or less interchangeable. They are both rated above the electronic speed limiter for the vehicle (250kph), not that the VRS could hit it anyway.
